Chapter 3 - The Missing Legal Loophole

The blood drained from my face faster than it had when I first saw Tessa across the terminal. I looked down at Tessa, whose face had gone completely white.
"What is he talking about, Tessa?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"When I gave birth in Flagstaff under an assumed name to protect myself from your mother's threats, the hospital clerk... she must have been bought off," Tessa sobbed, clutching the boys closer as they finally began to wake up, frightened by the shouting. "Your name was on the initial intake documents, Grant! I swear to God it was! But when I was discharged three days later, the official birth certificates filed with the state listed the father as 'Unknown'!"
"A masterclass in administrative efficiency," Marcus Vance stated smoothly, clicking open his leather briefcase. He pulled out a certified copy of the state birth registry. "See for yourself, Grant. State of Arizona records. Father: None. Legally, Tessa fled your residence six years ago, bore children out of wedlock, and has zero legal claim to association with the Whitlock estate. More importantly..." Marcus paused, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "...under Arizona family law, an unmarried mother who conceals children from a putative father for over five years without establishing formal paternity forfeits immediate custody rights if she is deemed an economic transient. Which, looking at her suitcase, she very clearly is."
Lorraine stepped forward, her voice dropping to a terrifying, velvet whisper that only I could hear. "Listen to me, Grant. Get on that plane to Seattle. Close the deal. Leave this pathetic chapter behind. If you walk away right now, I will ensure this woman is given a generous severance check to vanish to Mexico. If you fight me on this, I will crush her in family court, strip those boys away, and ensure you never see a dime of the Whitlock fortune or your sons."
She thought she had me cornered. She thought forty-seven years of obedience and fear had conditioned me to bow to her financial tyranny.
She didn't know that seeing the exact same crease between my son’s eyebrows had just detonated every ounce of my loyalty to her.
"Marcus," I said quietly, my voice dropping an octave as a dangerous calm settled over me.
"Yes, Grant?" Marcus smiled, thinking I was folding.
I reared back and drove my fist straight into Marcus Vance’s smug jaw.
The sound of cartilage crunching echoed through the terminal. Marcus crashed backward into a row of metal chairs, his briefcase flying open and scattering legal papers across the floor.

Lorraine gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth in pure horror. "Grant! Have you lost your mind?!"
"My flight to Seattle is canceled," I said, bending down to scoop up my sleeping youngest son into my arms, the boy instinctively resting his head against my shoulder with the exact same weight as my own soul. I grabbed Tessa’s hand with the other. "And my entire legal team is going to spend the next forty-eight hours dismantling you piece by piece, Mother. Run."
