Chapter 6 - The Confession of Lorraine’s Past

We managed to lose them in the labyrinthine maze of the Superstition Mountains, ditching the Scout deep inside an abandoned mining tunnel and hiking the final two miles on foot under the cover of a crescent moon.

By dawn, we had taken refuge inside a deserted park ranger outpost high up in the canyon, completely off any cellular grid. The boys finally fell back into an exhausted, safe sleep on a pile of spare sleeping bags.

Tessa sat by the small, barred window, watching the sun paint the jagged canyon walls in shades of fiery orange and blood red. I handed her a cup of instant coffee boiled over a camping stove.

"You didn't have to throw your entire life away for me last night, Grant," Tessa said softly, staring into the tin cup. "You lost your Seattle deal. Your mother’s company is going to crucify you."

"Let them," I replied, sitting down beside her on the wooden floor. "For six years, I thought you abandoned me because you were tired of my world. Every time I asked my mother about you, she looked me in the eye and lied with a smile. I spent half a decade building a fortress of control because I was terrified of ever feeling that helpless again. And all the while, you were living in terror, protecting my sons from the woman who raised me."

Tessa sighed, her shoulders trembling slightly. "There's something else you don't know, Grant. About why your mother hates me so much. It wasn't just about our social backgrounds."

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Before I worked for your father, my mother worked for Lorraine," Tessa whispered, the words tasting like ash. "Thirty years ago. She was your father’s personal secretary."

My stomach dropped into a bottomless void. "My father... and your mother?"

"They had an affair," Tessa nodded grimly. "When my mother became pregnant, Lorraine found out. She didn't fire my mother; she paid her off, forced her to sign a lifetime NDA, and banished her to a tiny rural town in New Mexico with nothing. My mother died bitter, broke, and broken. When I got the job at your parents' house years later, I didn't know who you were at first. But when Lorraine found out my last name, she realized history was repeating itself. She vowed to destroy me before I could 'trap' another Whitlock man with a child."

The staggering cruelty of it washed over me. My mother wasn't just protecting a corporate legacy—she was guarding a multi-generational vault of dark, toxic secrets, using human lives as collateral damage.

And then, my satellite burner phone—which I had kept powered off until now—suddenly vibrated violently in my pocket.
