Chapter 27 - Searching the Vault

We spent the entire night down in the limestone cellar beneath the vineyard floor.

The air was damp and biting, illuminated only by two high-intensity work lamps we had dragged down from the barn. File cabinets were pulled open, boxes upended, and thousands of pages of historical documents scattered across the stone table as we searched frantically for the original, unencumbered land grant from 1978.

"It has to be here," Julian muttered, coughing slightly from the old dust as he sifted through a metal box marked Personal Holdings - 1979. "Father wouldn't have left this loophole open. He was too meticulous."

"Keep looking," I urged, sliding open the back panel of a locked wooden chest in the corner of the vault.

Inside the chest was a heavy leather binder embossed with a gold notary seal. I flipped open the cover. There, preserved in protective plastic sleeves, was the original, independent property deed of The San Lucas Vineyard—signed, notarized, and registered solely under our father’s private name, completely independent of the Whitlock Resorts corporate umbrella.

And stapled to the back of the deed was a second piece of paper: a certified copy of a prenuptial agreement signed by Lorraine and our father on their wedding day in 1974, explicitly barring her from ever laying claim to any independent personal property he acquired in New Mexico.

"I found it," I whispered, holding up the deed into the harsh light of the work lamp.

Julian dropped the files he was holding and let out a long, ragged breath of pure relief, leaning against the stone wall with a heavy laugh. "The old man checkmated her forty years before she even knew she was playing the game."

"Not just her," I said, a dangerous, confident smile forming at the corner of my mouth. "Sterling Vance, too."
