Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Awakens

The ballroom erupted into total chaos.
Shouts of disbelief, gasps of shock, and the frantic clicking of camera shutters merged into a deafening wall of sound. Journalists who had sneaked into the gala pressed forward, their phones held high.
Vanessa staggered backward, colliding heavily with a marble pillar. Her face lost all its makeup-induced color until she looked like a corpse.
"DNA? What... what are you talking about?!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking hysterically. "She’s a nobody! Her mother is Maria Delgado, a third-generation immigrant housekeeper from the slums! Check her background! She has nothing to do with the Calloways!"
Julian Vance didn't even deign to look at Vanessa. He kept his eyes fixed on Maria, whose face had gone deathly pale.
"Maria," Julian said softly, stepping closer. "Or should I say... Maria Elena Calloway-Delgado."
Maria’s breath caught in her throat. She stumbled back half a step, clutching Lily so tightly the little girl squirmed. "How... how do you know that name? My father died in the shipyards when I was six. He told me our family was wiped out."
"Your father was Julian Calloway Jr.," Richard said, stepping up beside Julian. His imposing frame shielded Maria and Lily from the greedy, staring eyes of the wealthy predators surrounding them. "My late uncle. He was cast out of the family decades ago for marrying a woman from the docks. But blood, Maria, is thicker than the Atlantic Ocean. And the family seal was never revoked."
Vanessa pushed past a senator, her eyes wide with psychotic desperation. She pointed a trembling finger at Lily. "This is a fraud! A sick joke! You’re inventing a fake heir just to humiliate me because I questioned your authority, Richard! Look at them! They're peasants!"
Richard slowly turned his head to look at Vanessa. The look in his eyes was so devoid of human warmth that Vanessa literally choked on her own breath and stepped back.
"Security," Richard said quietly.
Two massive men in black tactical suits materialized from the shadows of the ballroom exits.
"Take Miss Cole’s engagement ring," Richard ordered coldly. "Strip her of her security clearance, cancel her corporate cards, and have her escorted off the property before the hour is out."
"You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing as the security guards caught her arms. Her designer gown ripped as she was dragged backward across the polished floor, her manicured nails clawing at the air. "I made you relevant, Richard! You’ll regret this! You and that gutter brat!"
Her screams echoed down the hallway until the heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting her off completely.
The silence that returned to the ballroom was heavy, thick with the realization of a complete and total paradigm shift. Three hundred of Charleston’s most powerful elite—bankers, politicians, old-money snobs who had spent years looking down their noses at people like Maria—now realized they were standing in the presence of the true rulers of the coast.
Richard turned back to Maria. He crouched down again, ignoring the dirt on his black designer trousers, and looked at Lily, who was busy trying to feed her stuffed rabbit a stray piece of decorative lace.
"You like it here, Lily?" Richard asked gently.
The little girl looked around the massive, glittering room, then looked up at her mother, and finally back at Richard.
"It’s too shiny," Lily decided honestly. "And the lady was mean."
A rare, genuine smile touched the corner of Richard Calloway’s scarred mouth. It completely transformed his face, making him look human for the first time all evening.
"The mean lady is gone," Richard said. "And nobody will ever be mean to you in this house again. Because this is your house now."
Maria’s head was spinning. Her entire life—the endless scrubbing, the cold damp apartments, the terrifying landlords, the constant fear of starvation—had evaporated in the span of ten minutes. But as she looked at Richard Calloway, she didn't feel relief. She felt a cold prickle of caution.
"Mr. Calloway," Maria said, her voice steady despite her trembling knees. "You don't just hand over a multi-billion-dollar empire because of a dance and a shared last name. What’s the catch?"
Julian Vance let out a low, approving chuckle. "Sharp. Just like her grandfather."

Richard stood up, towering over Maria, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that sent a strange, electric shiver down her spine.
"The catch, Maria," Richard said quietly, stepping close enough that she could smell the subtle scent of sandalwood and expensive bourbon, "is that my enemies didn't disappear just because Vanessa did. And now that your daughter has been unmasked as the true heir to the Calloway dynasty... she is the most dangerous target on the Eastern Seaboard."
