Chapter 4 - The Predator’s Return

Within forty-eight hours, the news had exploded across every major news outlet and social media platform in the country.
“BILLIONAIRE’S SHOCKING TWIST: From Maid to Mistress of the Coast! Toddler Inherits Calloway Empire!”
The headlines were relentless. Paparazzi camped outside the iron gates of the Calloway estate in droves, flashing cameras like lightning storms against the wrought-iron fence. Inside the sprawling, fortress-like mansion, Maria sat at a massive mahogany dining table that could easily seat fifty people, staring down at a bowl of oatmeal that felt entirely too heavy to swallow.
Lily, however, was having the time of her life.
The little girl was currently being chased around the sunroom by three personal tutors and a private chef who had spent the morning baking miniature strawberry tarts just for her. The oversized yellow dress was gone, replaced by a custom velvet smock made in Milan, though she still clutched her threadbare stuffed rabbit like a lifeline.
Maria rubbed her temples. Her hands were still soft from a lifetime of labor, but now they were surrounded by gold cutlery and crystal decanters.
"You look troubled, Cousin," a smooth, cultured voice drifted from the doorway.
Maria looked up to see a man leaning against the archway. He was impeccably dressed in a pearl-gray suit, with silver-streaked hair, piercing blue eyes, and a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
Arthur Calloway. Richard’s paternal cousin and the man who had managed Calloway Holdings' international shipping lanes while Richard ruled the domestic docks.
"I'm not your cousin yet, Mr. Calloway," Maria said coolly, setting down her silver spoon.
Arthur chuckled, walking lazily into the room and pouring himself a cup of black coffee from a silver pot. "Oh, make no mistake, Maria. In this family, blood isn't just thicker than water; it's a death sentence. Richard told you the truth, you know."
Maria narrowed her eyes. "About what?"
"About targets," Arthur murmured, leaning over the table, his blue eyes gleaming with a predatory light. "You think Vanessa Cole was the only one who wanted to marry into this empire? Vanessa was a nuisance—a loud, obnoxious mosquito. But the real sharks... the ones who control the shipping cartels in Rotterdam and Singapore... they’ve been waiting for a crack in Richard’s armor for a decade."
"And you think my daughter is a crack?" Maria asked, her voice dropping an octave, danger flashing in her eyes.
"I think a three-year-old heir with no political backing, no training, and a mother who spent her life scrubbing floors is the most vulnerable target in the history of the Carolinas," Arthur replied smoothly, taking a sip of his coffee. "Richard is powerful, yes. But he’s making enemies every day by protecting you. In fact, an emergency board meeting has already been called for tonight. Half the partners want to declare Lily incompetent due to her age and strip the trust."
Maria stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the parquet floor. "They wouldn't dare."
"Watch them," Arthur smiled coldly. "Unless... you make an alliance."
Maria stared at him. "An alliance with whom? You?"
"Why not?" Arthur spread his hands. "I can protect you from the board. I can guide you through the complex corporate restructuring. All I ask in return is your vote when the time comes to renegotiate the Asian shipping routes."
Before Maria could answer, a heavy, cold voice cut through the room like a razor blade.
"Stay away from her, Arthur."
Richard walked into the sunroom, his black coat slung over one shoulder, his face carved from granite. The air pressure in the room seemed to drop ten degrees instantly.
Arthur didn't flinch. He merely smiled, set his coffee cup down, and adjusted his cuffs. "Just welcoming the new nobility, Richard. Don't be so paranoid. We're family, remember?"
"You're a leech," Richard replied softly, stopping inches from Arthur. "And if you ever approach Maria or her daughter again without my express permission, I’ll feed you to the harbor seals."
Arthur’s smile finally faltered for a fraction of a second. He shot a sidelong glance at Maria, bowed slightly, and strolled out of the room.
Richard turned his dark, intense gaze toward Maria. "Did he touch you?"
May you like
"No," Maria said, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked up at the towering billionaire, feeling both intimidated and strangely safe. "He was offering an alliance. Said the board is going to try to strip Lily’s trust tonight."
"Let them try," Richard said, stepping closer to her. The sheer physical presence of him made it hard for Maria to breathe. "Let them walk into the boardroom tonight. I’ve been waiting three years to purge the traitors from this family anyway. And tonight, Maria... you’re going to sit at my right hand."
