Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Execution

The mahogany boardroom on the top floor of Calloway Tower was pitch black except for the amber glow of the city lights reflecting off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Twelve board members sat around the massive V-shaped conference table. They were men and women who controlled billions of dollars in assets, wearing bespoke suits and expressions of cold, calculated arrogance. At the center sat Arthur Calloway, leaning back with his fingers steepled together, playing the role of the concerned statesman.

"Gentlemen, and ladies," Arthur began, his voice echoing in the silent room. "We all know why we are here. The emotional outburst at the gala two nights ago was an embarrassment to this institution. A three-year-old child cannot run a global shipping empire. To allow a former housekeeper and her toddler to inherit controlling shares is corporate suicide."

Murmurs of agreement rippled around the table.

"I move to invoke Section 12 of the Calloway Charter," announced Marcus Sterling, a senior board member tied to international cartels. "Declare the heir mentally and physically unfit due to age, and transfer temporary operational control to Arthur Calloway."

"Second the motion," chimed another voice.

"The motion carries," Arthur declared with a triumphant smile, reaching for the gavel. "Unanimously."

CLACK.

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom suddenly burst open.

The sound of slow, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Richard Calloway walked into the room. But he wasn't alone.

Walking beside him, wearing a tailored midnight-blue evening gown that accentuated her natural grace and sharp, intelligent eyes, was Maria Delgado. She held her head high, the residual fear of her past life completely burned away, replaced by the fierce protective instinct of a mother fighting for her child's kingdom.

"Unanimously?" Richard’s voice cut through the darkness like a knife. "Are you sure about that, Marcus?"

Arthur’s triumphant smile faltered slightly as Richard and Maria pulled out the two chairs at the head of the table—the chairs reserved exclusively for the Chief Executive and the primary trust holder.

"Richard," Arthur said smoothly, recovering his composure. "You're emotional. You're letting a sentimental attachment cloud your judgment. Legally, the board has the power to overrule an unproven heir."

"You're right, Arthur," Richard said calmly, pulling out Maria’s chair for her before taking his own seat. "The board does have that power. Under normal circumstances."

He nodded to Julian Vance, who stepped out of the shadows carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Julian unlocked the briefcase and dropped three heavy manila folders onto the polished mahogany surface, sliding them directly toward Marcus Sterling and Arthur Calloway.

"What is this?" Marcus sneered, opening the top folder.

Within three seconds, all the color drained from Marcus Sterling’s face. His hands began to shake violently.

The folders contained comprehensive, undeniable financial records, wire transfers, encrypted communication logs, and offshore bank accounts proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Marcus Sterling, Arthur Calloway, and four other board members had been systematically embezzling funds from Calloway Shipping to finance illegal cargo smuggling operations through the Pacific.

"This... this is forgery!" Arthur shouted, slamming his hands on the table and standing up so fast his chair tipped over backward. "You fabricated these documents to seize control!"

"Did I?" Richard asked softly. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, his dark eyes locked onto Arthur with terrifying calm. "Every single transaction was intercepted by federal authorities forty-eight hours ago. And right outside this building, federal marshals are waiting with active warrants for tax evasion, treason, and racketeering."

As if on cue, the sound of heavy sirens wailed up from the street below, growing louder and closer by the second.

The remaining board members who weren't implicated instantly pushed their chairs back, scattering away from Arthur and Marcus as if they carried a plague.

Arthur stared at Richard, his face contorted in pure, venomous hatred. "You planned this. From the very beginning. You knew about the smuggling ring all along!"

"I didn't know who the ringleader was," Richard replied coldly. "Until Vanessa Cole threw that party, and you panicked, Arthur. You revealed your hand the moment you tried to manipulate Maria."

Arthur laughed—a manic, desperate sound. He reached into his coat pocket with a sudden, jerky movement. "If I’m going down, I’m taking the whole dynasty with me!"

Before Arthur could pull out the concealed firearm, Maria moved with blinding, unexpected speed.

Years of dodging abusive landlords, working double shifts, and protecting her daughter on the dangerous streets of Charleston had given her lightning-fast reflexes. She grabbed a heavy crystal water pitcher from the center of the table and hurled it directly at Arthur’s wrist with deadly precision.

CRASH.

The pitcher shattered against Arthur’s hand. He screamed in agony, dropping the weapon as it clattered uselessly across the marble floor.

In the next instant, the boardroom doors flew open, and federal agents swarmed the room, pinning Arthur and Marcus face-down to the carpet in a flurry of tactical gear and stainless steel handcuffs.
