Chapter 8 - The Final Waltz

The music swelled, filling the grand ballroom with a rich, timeless melody.
For the first time in his life, Richard Calloway didn't care about stock prices, hostile takeovers, or enemies lurking in the shadows. As he wrapped his arm around Maria’s waist and felt her hand rest securely in his palm, the heavy burdens of the past dissolved into nothingness.
Maria looked up at him, her eyes shining with a fierce, independent light that had captured his soul from the very first moment she stood up to defend her daughter.
"You know," Maria murmured over the music, a teasing smile playing on her lips, "you still never answered my question from that first night."
Richard raised an eyebrow, stepping in rhythm with her steps. "Which question, my love?"
"What would you have done if Lily actually couldn't dance?"
Richard chuckled softly, pulling her just a fraction closer so she could feel the steady, powerful beat of his heart.
"It wouldn't have mattered," Richard whispered, looking down at Lily, who was busy trying to teach her stuffed rabbit how to waltz around their shoes. "Because the moment you stepped into my ballroom and looked me in the eye... I knew I was already beaten."
Maria’s smile widened, bright and radiant, completely eclipsing the chandeliers above them.
"Good," she whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Because in this house, we don't lose."
