Chapter 2 - The Midday FreezeAt 11:45 AM, Roman Whitmore strode into the marble-and-glass lobby of Whitmore Towers, his custom-tailored charcoal suit hugging his frame like armor. Security guards nodded respectfully. Junior executives parted like the Red Sea when they saw him coming, terrified of catching his eye. Roman loved this rhythm. This was power. This was control.

He stepped into his private elevator, swiped his titanium keycard to access the executive penthouse floor, and pulled out his phone to check his emails.
That was when his thumb froze over the screen.
His inbox was flooded with automated alerts from every major financial institution in the Midwest.
“URGENT: Primary Corporate Operating Account frozen pending court order.” “SECURITY ALERT: Asset transfer authorization denied for Whitmore Holdings.” “NOTICE: Personal credit facilities suspended by issuer.”
Roman’s breath caught in his throat. He punched the number for his chief financial officer, Marcus Vance, hitting speed dial with a thumb that suddenly felt damp.
“Marcus! What the hell is going on with the operating accounts?” Roman barked the second the line connected, stepping out of the elevator into the quiet serenity of the executive suite.
On the other end, there was no polite greeting. There was only the sound of heavy breathing and frantic keyboard clicking.
“Roman,” Marcus said, his voice shaking with a panic Roman had never heard from him before. “Thank God you called. I’ve been trying to reach you for an hour. The banks... they locked everything.”
“Locked everything? Who authorized that? Call the VP of Commercial Lending at Chase right now! Tell them who I am!” Roman shouted, his strides turning frantic as he pushed open the heavy oak doors to his corner office.
“I tried, Roman! I called everyone!” Marcus yelled back over the sound of an alarm blaring faintly in the background. “It’s not a routine audit. It’s an emergency ex parte freeze order issued by the Cook County Circuit Court. A complete asset lockdown. Personal, corporate, trust funds, offshore holdings linked to your social security number—everything is tied up under seal.”
Roman stopped dead in the center of his expansive office, the panoramic view of the Chicago skyline suddenly feeling claustrophobic. “Under seal? By whose order? What judge?”
“Judge Alistair,” Marcus whispered. “And Roman... that’s not the worst part.”
“What could possibly be worse than my entire empire being frozen?” Roman snarled, his face flushing dark red.
“The petitioner,” Marcus swallowed hard. “It wasn't a business competitor. It wasn't the IRS. The petition was filed by Claire Whitmore. And she didn't just freeze the accounts... Roman, she initiated a total marital asset seizure based on emergency fraud statutes, backed by verified documentary evidence.”
The phone slipped slightly in Roman’s grip. Claire? His mind raced backward, trying to connect the quiet, submissive woman who packed school lunches with a legal tactical strike capable of bringing down a multi-million-dollar empire in under four hours.
“That’s impossible,” Roman said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Claire doesn't have a law degree. She doesn't have the passwords. She doesn't even know where the primary ledgers are kept!”
“Well, someone gave her the keys to the kingdom, Roman,” Marcus replied grimly. “Because according to the docket notification I just downloaded, she didn’t just freeze the money. She also filed an emergency custody injunction. The marshals are already at your primary residence on Maple Street. They’re executing a search and seizure warrant for your personal safe right now.”

Roman stared blankly out the floor-to-ceiling window.
Down on the street below, a black SUV bearing county insignia had just pulled up to the curb.
