Chapter 7 - The New HorizonDown on the coastline of a quiet, picturesque coastal town in Maine, the salty ocean breeze carried the scent of pine and saltwater.

It was early morning, exactly one week after the fall of the Whitmore empire.
The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the wrap-around porch of a charming, weathered-shingle house overlooking the crashing waves of the Atlantic.
Inside the bright, airy kitchen, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and cinnamon pancakes filled the air.
Noah and Lily were already outside on the wooden deck, arguing happily about whether a humpback whale could jump higher than a lighthouse, while four-year-old Emma sat at the kitchen island, happily coloring pictures of seagulls with a box of brand-new crayons.
Claire stood at the sink, rinsing a handful of fresh strawberries. She wore an oversized cable-knit sweater, her dark hair falling softly around her shoulders. For the first time in her life, there was no makeup to hide dark circles, no forced smile to keep up appearances for society galas, and no invisible leash tying her to a man who thought fear was love.
She looked out the window, watching the seagulls dive into the sparkling water.
Her phone buzzed on the counter.
She picked it up, expecting another legal update from Evelyn regarding the liquidation of Roman’s hidden assets. Instead, it was an encrypted message from an unknown number originating from a maximum-security federal holding facility in Chicago.
Claire unlocked the screen and tapped to open the message.
It was a text from Roman.
“Please, Claire. Talk to me. Tell them to drop the charges. I'll give you everything. Just... please don't leave me like this.”
Claire looked at the words on the screen. She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel satisfaction. She felt... absolute, profound emptiness for a man who had built his entire existence on sand.
With a calm, steady hand, she tapped out a single reply.
Filed.
Then, she blocked the number, turned off the phone, and tossed it into the kitchen drawer.
Footsteps approached behind her, and a pair of small arms wrapped around her waist.
“Mommy, can we go down to the beach and look for sea glass today?” Emma asked, looking up with big, bright brown eyes.
May you like
Claire smiled—a warm, radiant, completely genuine smile that lit up the entire room. She knelt down, wrapping her arms around her daughter and pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.
“We can do whatever we want, sweetheart,” Claire whispered, her voice filled with a fierce, beautiful freedom. “Today, and every day after that.”
