Chapter 6 - The Closing CircleAt 8:30 PM, the heavy oak doors of Roman Whitmore’s executive penthouse burst open, not with the gentle click of a keycard, but with the heavy, definitive thud of federal boots.

“Roman Whitmore!” a sharp voice echoed through the sprawling, silent office. “Step away from the desk with your hands where we can see them!”
Roman spun around, his face white with fury, his designer suit rumpled from hours of pacing the floor. Two FBI special agents stepped into the room, flanked by local Chicago police detectives. Behind them stood Marcus Vance, looking pale, defeated, and utterly shell-shocked.
“Are you out of your mind?” Roman snarled, lunging forward before checking himself as he saw the unmistakable gleam of steel handcuffs in the lead agent’s hand. “Do you know who I am? I am a pillar of this city! I demand to speak to my attorney!”
“You can speak to whoever you want down at the federal holding facility, Mr. Whitmore,” the lead agent said coldly, stepping forward and grabbing Roman’s arm with a grip like a vise. “You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, corporate racketeering, obstruction of justice, and the first-degree murder of Elena Vance in the state of New York, dating back to 2014.”
The blood drained entirely from Roman’s face. The name Elena Vance hit him like a physical blow to the chest.
“That’s... that’s impossible,” Roman stammered, his arrogant composure finally cracking completely. “That case was closed! It was ruled an accident!”
“It was ruled an accident because you paid off the lead investigator and forged a death certificate with stolen credentials,” a cool, smooth voice chimed from the doorway.
Roman turned his head. Stepping out from the shadows of the private hallway was attorney Evelyn Vance, holding a clean, pristine copy of the federal indictment.
“Meet Elena’s younger sister, Roman,” Evelyn said, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving fury. “I spent ten years becoming a lawyer just so I could find the monster who killed my sister. And when you married Claire under a false identity five years ago, you didn't just bring a wife into your home—you invited the one person in the world who had the legal mind, the motive, and the patience to dismantle your entire life brick by brick.”
Roman stared at Evelyn, his knees suddenly buckling beneath him. The realization hit him with crushing, suffocating weight.
Claire wasn't a victim.
Claire had been Elena’s closest confidante, working undercover in his house for five agonizing years, waiting for the exact right moment to pull the pin.
The agents grabbed Roman’s arms, forcing them behind his back as the heavy steel cuffs clicked shut. As they dragged him toward the private elevator, Roman let out one last desperate, pathetic cry into the empty, echoing office.

“Claire!”
There was no answer. Only the hum of the city lights outside, shining down on a kingdom that no longer belonged to him.
