Chapter 4 - The Ghost from the PastBy 4:00 PM, the news had hit the financial wires.

“REAL ESTATE MOGUL ROMAN WHITMORE FACES SUDDEN ASSET FREEZE AND FEDERAL PROBE.”
In a sleek, high-rise hotel suite overlooking Lake Michigan, Veronica Vale stared at the breaking news banner flashing across CNN. The phone slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the marble floor.
“No, no, no,” Veronica whispered, backing away from the television as if it might reach out and grab her.
She grabbed her handbag, fished out her phone, and dialed Roman’s cell. It went straight to voicemail. She dialed again. Same result. The man who had promised her the world just hours earlier had completely vanished behind a wall of legal red tape and federal subpoenas.
Desperate, Veronica locked herself in the bedroom, grabbed her laptop, and opened a secure browser window. She typed in a name she hadn't dared look up in nearly a decade.
Elena Vance.
The search results loaded instantly, bringing up old newspaper archives, missing persons reports, and court records from a small town in upstate New York.
At the center of the articles was a photograph of a young woman with dark hair, warm brown eyes, and a bright, hopeful smile—a woman who looked so startlingly like Veronica that looking at the screen felt like staring into a twisted mirror.
Veronica’s hands began to shake violently.
Because Elena Vance wasn't just a random name from Roman’s past. Elena Vance was the woman Roman had legally married twelve years ago, before he changed his last name, altered his social security records, and fled New York after a catastrophic financial scandal left one person dead and millions of dollars missing.
And according to the certified death certificate tucked inside Claire Whitmore’s black portfolio—a document Veronica had never known existed—Elena Vance hadn't died in a tragic car accident as Roman had sworn to her under oath.
She had been murdered.
And the primary suspect in the cold case file, safely buried under a mountain of forged identities and offshore bribes, was none other than Roman Whitmore.
Veronica stared at the screen, a cold wave of absolute horror washing over her. She hadn't been Roman’s lover, his confidante, or his chosen successor.

She had been a pawn. A decoy. A replaceable shadow of the first woman Roman had tried to bury.
And Claire Whitmore—the sweet, domestic wife who packed school lunches—had known about it the entire time.
