Chapter 8 - The Aftermath in the CityBack in Chicago, the fall of the Whitmore empire was dominating every headline across the nation.

Financial news networks ran continuous loops of footage showing federal agents hauling crates of documents, luxury watches, and bearer bonds out of the Maple Street estate. The once-untouchable name of Roman Whitmore had become a punchline, a cautionary tale of corporate greed, arrogance, and domestic betrayal taught in business ethics classes across the country.

Veronica Vale sat in a cramped, dimly lit coffee shop on the outskirts of the city, wearing a baseball cap pulled low over her face and oversized sunglasses.

She watched a flat-screen television mounted on the wall playing the noon news broadcast.

“...and with federal prosecutors confirming that Roman Whitmore faces up to forty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole, attention has now turned to the mysterious disappearance of his wife, Claire Whitmore, and their three children, whose whereabouts remain unknown following a court-sanctioned relocation order...”

Veronica gripped her cardboard coffee cup so tightly that the hot liquid spilled over the rim, burning her fingers. She didn't even flinch.

She realized now how close she had come to the fire. If Claire had chosen a different path—if Claire had decided to destroy Veronica along with Roman—she could have easily dragged her into the federal probe for receiving stolen property and aiding financial fraud.

Instead, Claire hadn't even bothered to acknowledge Veronica’s existence. To Claire, Veronica hadn't been an enemy worthy of a fight. She had simply been a fly on the wall—a pathetic, temporary distraction that Roman had brought home while digging his own grave.

Veronica pulled her jacket tighter around herself, stood up, and walked out into the cold Chicago rain, leaving her coffee untouched on the table. She was completely alone, stripped of her diamond bracelets, her luxury hotel suites, and her illusions of grandeur.

The Whitmore empire was gone. And the ghosts had finally reclaimed what was theirs.
