Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

By 10:00 AM, the financial trap snapped shut with the precision of a guillotine.

Ryan was sitting in our living room with Linda, reviewing a printed template of a resignation letter she had downloaded from the internet. They were gloating, sipping fresh coffee, and discussing how they were going to spend the equity from the house once I officially stepped down from the military.

"Once she signs this, her life is in our hands," Linda said, adjusting her glasses with a triumphant smirk. "A woman with a shaved head and no uniform has nowhere to go. She’ll crawl back to us, begging for permission to breathe."

Suddenly, the front door rattled violently. Before Ryan could stand up to check, heavy thuds echoed through the hallway.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Open up! County Sheriff's Department!"

Ryan frowned, dropping his coffee mug onto the coffee table with a loud clatter. "What the hell? Who is that?"

He pulled the door open to find two uniformed sheriff’s deputies standing on the porch, flanked by a process server holding a thick stack of legal documents.

"Are you Ryan Vance?" the lead deputy asked, his hand resting casually on his tactical belt.

"Yes? I'm Ryan. What is this about?"

"Mr. Vance, you’ve been served," the deputy said, thrusting the documents into Ryan's chest. "You are hereby ordered to vacate the premises within forty-eight hours. All financial accounts linked to you have been frozen by court order due to pending litigation involving financial fraud, asset misappropriation, and domestic coercion."

Ryan stared at the papers, his face turning an alarming shade of pale grey. "Frozen? What are you talking about? This is my wife’s house! She works for me—well, she works for the government, but I have rights!"

Linda rushed to the door, her eyes bulging behind her thick lenses. "There's been a mistake! My daughter-in-law is a submissive housewife! She wouldn't sue her own husband! Show me who authorized this!"

The deputy pulled out a second document and handed it directly to Linda. "This is a temporary restraining order issued on behalf of Colonel Elena Vance. You are prohibited from coming within five hundred feet of her, her residence, or her place of work. Any violation will result in immediate arrest."

Linda gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been physically struck. "Arrested? Me? For what? Protecting my son from an ungrateful, aggressive witch?"

"For assault, battery, and attempted extortion," the deputy stated coldly. "Have a nice day, sir, ma'am."

The deputies turned and walked down the driveway, leaving Ryan and Linda standing in the doorway in absolute, paralyzed shock.

Ryan looked down at the legal papers trembling in his hands. Page after page detailed every single dollar he had illegally transferred, every fraudulent document he and his mother had drafted, and a complete itemized list of every asset I owned—none of which he had any legal claim to.

"Mom..." Ryan whispered, his voice cracking. "She... she didn't write a resignation letter."

"Then what did she do?" Linda shrieked, her composure completely shattering.

"She just declared war."
