Chapter 5 - The Military Tribunal

Two weeks later, the civilian legal proceedings were moving at lightning speed, backed by the unshakeable might of military legal representation. Because Ryan had attempted to tamper with a service member's financial stability and military security during an active national security deployment cycle, the Department of Defense’s legal arm had stepped in to assist my civilian attorneys.

It wasn't just a divorce anymore. It was an institutional investigation into civilian interference with a senior military officer.

I sat in the sleek, wood-paneled courtroom of the county courthouse, wearing my Class-A dress uniform. The silver eagle insignia gleamed under the fluorescent lights. Across the aisle sat Ryan—disheveled, wearing a cheap off-the-rack suit he had borrowed from a distant cousin, with dark circles under his eyes and a look of complete spiritual exhaustion.

Beside him sat Linda, who had been released on bail but was facing felony charges for assault, battery, and stalking. She looked smaller, her arrogant glare replaced by a bitter, frightened scowl.

Judge Arthur Vance—no relation, thankfully—adjusted his glasses and looked down from the bench with a severe expression.

"This court has reviewed the evidence provided by Colonel Elena Vance’s legal team," Judge Vance announced, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "We have financial records showing systematic embezzlement and asset concealment by the defendant, Ryan Vance, totaling one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. We have medical documentation and photographic evidence of physical assault and battery committed by Linda Vance against an active-duty United States Colonel."

Ryan swallowed hard, his hands trembling in his lap.

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "the Department of Defense has submitted an amicus curiae brief detailing how these coordinated actions directly threatened national security operations by destabilizing a high-ranking intelligence commander during a critical transition phase."

Linda raised her hand, ignoring her defense attorney’s frantic whispers. "Your Honor! She’s lying! She’s a manipulative woman who abandoned her family—"

"Silence, Mrs. Vance," Judge Vance barked, slamming his gavel down with a sharp crack. "One more outburst and I will hold you in contempt and revoke your bail immediately. You are in a court of law, not your living room."

Linda shrank back into her seat, biting her lip so hard it turned white.

"The court hereby grants Colonel Elena Vance an immediate, uncontested decree of divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty, financial fraud, and domestic abuse," Judge Vance declared. "All joint accounts are hereby dissolved, with 100% of remaining liquid assets, retirement funds, and real estate holdings awarded exclusively to Colonel Vance. Furthermore, Ryan Vance is ordered to pay back the full one hundred and fifty thousand dollars within ninety days, failure of which will result in immediate incarceration."

Ryan buried his face in his hands, letting out a stifled sob. The house was mine. My salary was mine. My pension was mine. My life was finally, completely mine.

"As for Linda Vance," the judge added, looking directly at my former mother-in-law, "you are sentenced to two years of probation, mandatory anger management, and a permanent, lifetime restraining order prohibiting any contact whatsoever with Colonel Vance. Court is adjourned."

The heavy gavel fell one final time, sealing their doom.
