Chapter 4 - The Public Humiliation

By sunset, the walls were closing in on Ryan and Linda from every possible direction.
Because Ryan’s truck—which I had generously purchased for him two years ago—was tied to my corporate credit lines and frozen accounts, the auto finance company's automated repossession system had already flagged it. At 4:30 PM, while Ryan was trying to figure out how to buy groceries with zero dollars in his pocket, a tow truck pulled up into our driveway.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" Ryan yelled, sprinting out the front door as the driver hooked up his precious, lifted Ford F-150.
"Repo order," the driver grunted, chewing on a toothpick. "Ordered by the primary account holder, Colonel Elena Vance. Truck's going to the impound lot, buddy."
"You can't do that! That's my truck!" Ryan screamed, slamming his hands against the flatbed.
"Tell it to the judge," the driver replied, climbing into his cab and driving away, leaving Ryan standing alone in the middle of the driveway, humiliated and watching his prized possession disappear down the suburban street.
Inside the house, Linda was packing her meager belongings into plastic trash bags because she refused to walk out with her designer luggage—she claimed it would bruise her dignity. Her hands were shaking so badly she could barely tape the bags shut.
"This is all her fault!" Linda shrieked, throwing a ceramic figurine across the living room floor, where it shattered into a hundred pieces. "That monster destroyed our lives! We are the victims here!"
"Mom, shut up!" Ryan snapped, marching back into the house with veins bulging in his neck. "Just shut up! Your stupid brilliant idea to shave her head and steal her money is what got us thrown out on the street! The cops are looking for you because of the restraining order! We have zero dollars, no car, no house, and no way out!"
Linda gasped, her eyes widening in betrayal. "How dare you speak to me like that! I did it for us! I did it because she was getting too powerful!"
"Well, look where your power play got us!" Ryan shouted back, slamming the front door. "We’re homeless!"
Just then, a pair of headlights swept across the living room window. Ryan rushed to the blinds, hoping against hope that maybe it was a mistake, maybe I had changed my mind.
Instead, a sleek black sedan pulled up, and two county sheriff deputies stepped out, walking purposefully toward the porch.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
"Linda Vance?" a deputy's voice boomed through the door. "Open up. You are in violation of the restraining order and being placed under arrest for domestic assault and harassment."
Linda let out a blood-curdling shriek of pure terror and dove behind the sofa, clutching her trash bags like a shield.

Ryan slowly opened the door, raising his hands in defeat as the cold metal of handcuffs clicked onto his mother’s wrists just minutes later. As Linda was escorted down the walkway in front of all our neighbors—who were watching from their porches with wide eyes and whispered gossip—she screamed my name into the night sky, promising vengeance.
I wasn't even watching. At that exact moment, I was standing on the balcony of my military quarters on base, looking up at the stars, feeling lighter and freer than I had in over a decade.
