Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

While Ryan and Linda were drowning in legal paperwork at the house, I was sitting inside a high-security briefing room at Fort Meade, reviewing top-secret intelligence feeds with my new staff. As a newly minted Colonel commanding a major intelligence unit, my mind was entirely focused on global threats, secure communications, and strategic superiority.
My personal life was being handled by the best legal hounds the military and civilian sectors could provide.
At 1:00 PM, my secure terminal beeped. It was an encrypted message from Marcus Vance containing an audio recording of Ryan's phone call to my office.
I plugged in my secure headset and hit play.
"Elena! Pick up the damn phone!" Ryan’s voice blared through the speakers, frantic, angry, and tinged with sheer panic. "What is wrong with you?! The police just came to the house! They gave us papers saying we have to leave, our accounts are frozen, and there's a restraining order against Mom! Are you out of your mind?!"
I listened calmly, watching data streams scroll across my primary monitor.
"Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is?!" Ryan continued, his voice cracking as he ranted. "My mother is having a panic attack on the couch! How are we supposed to pay the mortgage? How am I supposed to make payments on my truck? You can't just cut us off! You're my wife!"
Then, Linda’s voice piped up in the background, shrieking into the phone: "You ungrateful little monster! You worthless bitch! You think the Army protects you from family? We’ll ruin your career! We’ll call your general and tell him what kind of unstable, vicious harpy you really are! You'll be court-martialed by the end of the week!"
I pressed a button on my console, routing the call directly to the base legal office for record-keeping, and then spoke into the mic with icy detachment.
"Ryan," I said, my voice cutting through his frantic rambling like a scalpel.
There was a dead silence on the other end of the line.
"Elena?" Ryan breathed, his tone instantly shifting from aggressive to pleading. "Thank God. Look, honey, let’s just calm down. Drop these crazy lawsuits. The police made a mistake, right? Just call them off, come home, and we can talk about this like adults—"
"Listen very carefully, Ryan," I interrupted, every word deliberate and lethal. "You and your mother broke into my personal space while I was unconscious. You assaulted me, shaved my head, and tried to force me to resign from a career I built over twenty-two years of blood, sweat, and sacrifice. And while I was at work this morning, you attempted to loot my financial accounts."
"That was Mom’s idea—" Ryan immediately stammered, throwing his own mother under the bus without a second hesitation. "Mom said we needed to secure our future—"
"You signed your name to the fraudulent documents, Ryan. That makes you an active participant in financial fraud and conspiracy," I replied smoothly. "Furthermore, your mother just threatened to contact my commanding general and make false accusations to ruin my career. That constitutes conduct unbecoming, harassment, and interference with military operations."
"Elena, please!" Ryan sobbed, the reality of his situation finally crashing down on him. "We have nowhere to go! My truck is going to be repossessed! Mom's insurance is cancelled! We're broke!"
"Then I suggest you learn what it feels like to obey," I said, echoing his exact words from the night before. "Hair grows back, Ryan. But bankruptcies and criminal charges tend to last a lifetime."
I clicked the end-call button, severing the connection permanently.

Across the room, Major Hayes looked up from his tablet, raising an eyebrow. "Everything alright, Colonel?"
"Just tidying up some loose ends, Major," I replied, a cold smile touching my lips. "Target neutralized. Let's move on to the next briefing."
