CHAPTER 2 – The Secret Hidden in the Collar
Thomas's hands shook as he reached toward the faded tag.
The wolf didn't move away.
It simply watched him.
Scratched into the weathered metal were three words that stole the air from his lungs.
K-9 UNIT. SHADOW.
Thomas nearly collapsed.
Shadow.
That couldn't be possible.
Forty-two years earlier, Shadow had been the most legendary search-and-rescue wolf working alongside a classified mountain rescue team.
Thomas had been its handler.
They had survived avalanches, wildfires, and impossible missions together.
Until one disastrous operation.
An explosion tore through the mountain.
Thomas was rescued.
Shadow disappeared beneath thousands of tons of rock.
The military declared the animal dead.
Thomas blamed himself every single day afterward.
He retired carrying that guilt like a wound that never healed.
Now...
The wolf standing before him looked almost identical.
Older.
Scarred.
Its muzzle streaked with gray.

Tears streamed down Thomas's face.
"Shadow..."
The wolf slowly pressed its forehead against his.
At that exact moment, helicopters thundered across the morning sky.
Rescue teams had finally located Thomas's emergency beacon.
As medics rushed toward him, the wolf quietly stepped back into the trees.
"Wait!" Thomas cried.
But the animal disappeared without making a sound.
The rescuers found only enormous paw prints leading deep into the forest.
Days later, after recovering in the hospital, Thomas returned with wildlife experts determined to find the mysterious wolf.
Instead...
They discovered something hidden beneath an ancient pine tree.
A small metal box.
Inside were faded photographs from the old rescue unit.
A broken service medal.
And a handwritten note sealed inside waterproof cloth.
The note wasn't addressed to the government.
It wasn't addressed to the military.
It was addressed to Thomas.
The handwriting belonged to Captain William Hayes...
The commander who everyone believed had died in that explosion.
The final sentence made Thomas freeze.
"If you're reading this... then Shadow finally found you. But the truth about what happened on that mountain was never an accident."
