CHAPTER 4 – The Daughter Who Was Never His

Thomas drove through the rain like a man running from death itself.
When he reached Emily’s house, the front door was open.
The lights flickered.
And Shadow stood on the porch, soaked and silent, staring toward the woods.
Inside, Emily sat on the floor clutching the old photograph.
Her face was pale.
“Dad,” she said, voice breaking, “why is there a picture of me in a rescue file from forty-two years ago?”
Thomas couldn’t answer.
Because he had just realized the impossible truth.
Emily had not been adopted from a hospital like he was told.
She had been the child rescued from Blackwood Mountain.
And someone had placed her in Thomas’s life to keep her hidden.
Before he could explain, a black SUV rolled slowly onto the street.
Then another.
Then a third.
Men in dark coats stepped out.
One of them smiled and said,
“Mr. Carter, thank you for keeping her safe all these years.”
Emily stood behind Thomas, trembling.
“Who are you?”
The man’s smile vanished.
“Family.”
Suddenly, Shadow growled.
Not at the men.
At Emily’s necklace.
The tiny silver locket she had worn since childhood began to glow under the porch light.
Thomas opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was not a photo.
It was a microchip.
And engraved beneath it were four words:
PROPERTY OF HAYES BLOODLINE.
Thomas looked up in horror.
Captain Hayes wasn’t dead.
He wasn’t just Emily’s protector.
May you like
He was her real father.
And the people outside had finally come to take her back.
