CHAPTER 6 – The Hunter Who Killed Ghosts

The lights went out.

Glass exploded across the floor as more bullets ripped through the house.

"Get down!" Thomas shouted.

Shadow grabbed Emily's sleeve and pulled her toward the basement stairs just as another shot blasted through the front door.

Outside, the men in black returned fire.

But they weren't shooting at police.

They were fighting another team.

A team with no uniforms.

No insignias.

Only white wolf symbols painted on their tactical armor.

The sniper who had fired the first shot stepped from the darkness.

A woman.

Cold blue eyes.

Silver hair tied back.

She removed her night-vision goggles and smiled.

"I've been hunting Captain Hayes for forty-two years."

She looked directly at Emily.

"And now... I've finally found his daughter."

Thomas felt the blood drain from his face.

"You know Hayes?"

The woman laughed softly.

"I didn't just know him."

"I was the one who pulled the trigger."

Emily froze.

"You killed my father?"

"No."

The woman slowly shook her head.

"I failed."

"He survived."

Thomas's eyes widened.

"What?"

The woman pointed toward the forest behind the house.

"Captain Hayes is alive."

"But he only has one week left to live."

Silence filled the room.

Then Shadow did something he had never done before.

He ran into the forest...

Without looking back.

As if he knew exactly where Hayes had been hiding for the last forty-two years.

Thomas grabbed Emily's hand.

"We're following him."

Neither of them noticed the tiny red light blinking beneath the family car.

A tracking device.

The real hunt...

Had only just begun.
