CHAPTER 7 – The Last Guardian

Shadow never slowed down.
He raced through the dense forest with the confidence of an animal that had memorized every trail decades ago.
Thomas and Emily struggled to keep up as dawn broke over the mountains.
After nearly two hours, the wolf stopped before a towering cliff hidden behind cascading vines.
To everyone else, it looked like solid rock.
But Shadow pushed his head against a moss-covered boulder.
With a deep rumble...
The cliff slowly opened.
A hidden bunker.
Forgotten by the world.
Inside, dusty generators still hummed with emergency power.
Maps covered the walls.
Military radios sat untouched.
And at the center of the room...
An elderly man slowly stood from a wooden chair.
His beard had turned completely white.
One eye was covered by an old scar.
But Thomas recognized him instantly.
"Captain... Hayes?"
The old man smiled weakly.
"You finally made it."
Emily couldn't breathe.
"You're... alive?"
Hayes nodded.
"I stayed dead because the people hunting us never stopped."
Before anyone could speak again, Hayes looked at Shadow.
The old wolf limped toward him.
For the first time since Thomas had reunited with Shadow...
The wolf looked tired.
Very tired.
Hayes gently placed his forehead against the animal's.
"You've kept your promise longer than anyone ever could."
Thomas frowned.
"What promise?"
Hayes's eyes filled with tears.
"Forty-two years ago, Shadow refused to leave your side after the explosion."
"But when I asked him to protect Emily instead..."
"He chose her."
"He watched over her from the forest every birthday."
"Every camping trip."
"Every time she got lost."
Emily covered her mouth, remembering strange moments throughout her childhood.
The mysterious wolf she had glimpsed from a distance...
The glowing eyes that always disappeared before anyone else could see them...
It had always been Shadow.
He had never abandoned her.
He had spent forty-two years keeping a promise no human could have fulfilled.
Then, without warning...
Shadow's legs gave out.
The legendary guardian collapsed at Hayes's feet.
Emily dropped beside him, crying.
"No... please..."
Shadow lifted his head one final time.
His tired amber eyes looked from Hayes...
To Thomas...
Then to Emily.
His tail wagged once.
Just once.
May you like
Then everything became still.
The greatest guardian had finally finished his mission.
