Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke in the Dark

00:05... 00:04... 00:03...
David stared triumphantly at the remote, his thumb pressing down hard on the red button.
Nothing happened.
The timer on the cake flashed 00:00, but there was no deafening blast, no shattering of crystal chandeliers, no rain of fire and flesh. The candles continued to burn peacefully, the white frosting smooth and undisturbed.
David froze, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief. He stared down at the remote, frantically pressing the button over and over again.
"What... what is this?!" David stammered, panic finally cracking his arrogant facade. "Why didn't it detonate?! I wired it myself!"
Alessandro didn't stop walking toward him. A faint, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of the boss's lips.
"Did you really think, David, that after ruling the underworld for twenty years, I would leave the security of my home—and the safety of my son—to chance?" Alessandro’s voice was velvet thunder. "When my men first installed the kitchen appliances last week, they intercepted your encrypted messages to the Russian syndicate. We knew you were plotting before you even bought the explosives."
David stumbled backward, horror washing over him. "No... that's impossible! The comms were cut! The system was offline!"
"Your system," Alessandro corrected smoothly. "Not mine. You tapped into our secondary decoy network—the one we use specifically to trap rats like you."
Suddenly, the heavy iron doors at the rear of the hall swung wide open.
Stepping through the threshold wasn't the Russian syndicate. It was a heavily armed strike team of Moretti loyalists, led by Marcus Vance—bruised and bleeding from the head, but holding an assault rifle with lethal precision. Flanking Marcus were two elite snipers who immediately locked their laser sights directly onto the chests of David and his four Bratva mercenaries.
"Drop your weapons! Drop them now!" Marcus roared, his voice shaking with the fury of a betrayed uncle and a loyal soldier.

David’s mercenaries looked at each other, glanced at the red laser dots dancing across their uniforms, and instantly dropped their weapons to the polished marble floor with a loud clatter.
David stood completely alone, the master remote slipping from his trembling fingers and shattering into pieces at Alessandro's feet.
