Chapter 7 - The Last Candle

The music slowly resumed from the hidden speakers—a soft, gentle classical waltz that washed over the polished marble floors as if nothing had ever happened.
The guests, still trembling from the adrenaline rush, slowly began to relax, murmuring in hushed tones of admiration and fear toward the man who ruled New York.
Alessandro walked back to the long white table.
The three-tiered cake still sat there, pristine and untouched, save for the clean slice through the center where the deactivated explosive had been safely removed and replaced with a fresh block of vanilla sponge by the head chef.
Ethan walked back into the hall, led gently by Sophia, who was still holding little Lily's hand. Lily looked up at Alessandro with her big brown eyes, no longer terrified, but filled with a quiet, solemn understanding.
Alessandro walked over, knelt down once more on one knee, and looked directly at the little girl.
"You saved us all tonight, Lily," Alessandro said, his voice warm, gentle, and full of a profound gratitude no gold could ever buy. "You are the bravest person in this entire city."
Lily smiled shyly, burying her face slightly against her mother’s black apron.
Sophia wiped a tear from her cheek, bowing her head deeply. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti... for everything."
"No, Sophia," Alessandro said, standing up and placing a hand on Ethan’s shoulder. "Thank you. Your daughter taught me a lesson tonight: never ignore the quietest voice in the room."
He turned to his son. "Ethan. Come here, birthday boy."
Ethan stepped up to the cake, his eyes shining with excitement. The eight thin candles were still burning brightly, their pale flames dancing against the gold-rimmed chandeliers.
"Make a wish, son," Alessandro whispered, wrapping his arm around his boy.

Ethan closed his eyes tightly, whispered his wish under his breath, and blew out all eight candles in one single, mighty puff.
As a cloud of sweet smoke drifted up toward the high vaulted ceiling, the grand hall burst into warm, genuine applause. Outside, the August rain continued to fall, washing away the blood and betrayal of the night, leaving behind an empire that was stronger, darker, and more untouchable than ever before.
