CHAPTER 5 – The Woman Everyone Buried Walked Through the Door

Emily didn't sleep.

The anonymous text haunted her all night.

"Your mother is alive."

Impossible.

She had stood beside a grave for twenty-three years.

She had cried over a coffin.

She had carried flowers every birthday.

Someone was playing with her.

Or...

Someone knew the truth.

At dawn, another message arrived.

Locker 117. Grand Central Station. Come alone.

Against every instinct, Emily went.

The station buzzed with commuters who had no idea history was about to change.

Inside Locker 117 sat a small leather journal, a silver key, and one handwritten note.

"If you're reading this, they finally arrested Richard. But he's only the first domino."

Emily recognized the handwriting instantly.

Her mother's.

Her knees nearly gave out.

The journal described a secret organization hidden behind Richard Hale's corporation—an alliance of politicians, judges, executives, and security chiefs who had spent decades controlling investigations, elections, and billion-dollar mergers.

Richard had never been the mastermind.

He had been their public face.

Then Emily found the last page.

"I never died."

"The woman buried in my place volunteered because her family was already gone."

"If I had stayed with you, they would have killed us both."

Emily's hands shook uncontrollably.

Before she could read further, her phone rang.

It was the FBI.

"Emily... Richard Hale has disappeared."

"What?"

"He escaped during transport."

At that exact moment, every television inside the station switched to breaking news.

A prison transport bus burned on the highway.

Officials believed Richard Hale had died in the explosion.

Emily stared at the screen.

Then her phone vibrated again.

Unknown Number.

May you like

"He's alive."

"And he's coming for the journal."
