CHAPTER 2 — THE PERFORMANCE THAT STOPPED TIME

The first note of the piano echoed across the silent arena.

It wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't loud.

It was heartbreakingly simple.

Emily didn't move.

For nearly five full seconds...

She stood completely still.

The audience began whispering again.

"Did she forget the routine?"

"She's frozen."

One judge reached for his scoring sheet.

Another shook his head.

"This is over already."

Then...

Emily pushed gently against the ice.

One graceful glide.

Then another.

There was nothing flashy about it.

Yet something about the way she moved made conversations slowly disappear.

Every edge carved perfectly clean lines into the ice.

Every turn flowed effortlessly into the next.

Within thirty seconds, the laughter had completely stopped.

The commentators looked at each other.

"Her skating skills..."

"...they're extraordinary."

Then came the first jump.

A flawless triple Lutz.

The landing was so quiet it barely made a sound.

Gasps spread across the arena.

A second jump followed.

Then another.

Triple Flip.

Triple Loop.

Perfect combination.

Even the judges unconsciously leaned forward.

"This can't be happening..."

One former champion in the audience whispered,

"Who taught her?"

Backstage, several coaches hurried toward the athlete database.

No one could find any record of Emily Carter.

No national rankings.

No junior competitions.

No professional club.

It was as if she had appeared out of nowhere.

Halfway through the program...

Something unexpected happened.

Emily stumbled.

The audience gasped.

She caught herself...

But for a split second pain flashed across her face.

Hidden beneath her jacket, a small bandage had begun soaking through with blood.

Only the rink medic noticed.

"She's injured..."

The doctor immediately stood.

"We have to stop this."

But Emily kept skating.

Faster.

Stronger.

Every spin became more breathtaking than the last.

Then came the impossible.

The final combination.

A jump so difficult that only a handful of elite skaters had landed it successfully in major competition.

She accelerated.

The entire arena rose to its feet.

One...

Two...

Three rotations...

Silence.

She landed perfectly.

The sound that followed wasn't applause.

It was an explosion.

Thousands of people jumped to their feet at once.

Some were crying.

Others screamed in disbelief.

The judges stared at their monitors, unable to speak.

Then the technical controller suddenly stood up.

His hands were trembling.

"I know her..."

Everyone turned toward him.

He slowly removed his headset.

His voice cracked.

"Ten years ago...

she wasn't just a champion.

She was considered the greatest skating prodigy our country had ever seen."

The arena fell silent again.

"But after a devastating accident...

everyone believed she had disappeared forever."

Emily lowered her head.

A single tear rolled onto the ice.

Then, before anyone could announce the scores...

A little boy in a wheelchair appeared at the entrance of the arena.

"Emily!"

He called her name with all the strength he had left.

She smiled through her tears.

The audience still didn't know...

the greatest secret of all had yet to be revealed.
