CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET SHE HAD HIDDEN FOR TEN YEARS

The arena was silent.

Not a single person moved as the little boy in the wheelchair rolled toward the ice.

"Emily!"

His voice echoed through the stadium.

Emily dropped to one knee, tears filling her eyes before he had even reached the barrier.

The boy stretched out his arms.

"You did it... I knew you would."

She smiled through trembling lips.

"I promised you I wouldn't give up."

Many spectators wiped away tears, still unable to understand what was happening.

The judges looked at one another in confusion.

"Who is the boy?"

The chief referee picked up the microphone.

"Miss Carter... before we announce the scores, could you explain?"

Emily remained silent for several seconds.

Finally, she stood.

"My name is Emily Carter."

"I used to compete."

"I dreamed of going to the Olympics."

A giant screen behind her suddenly displayed an old photograph discovered by the event staff.

It showed a smiling sixteen-year-old girl standing on the podium, wearing a gold medal around her neck.

The audience gasped.

"It really is her..."

"I remember that face!"

"She was called the Ice Princess!"

An elderly coach slowly stood up in the front row.

"I trained against her years ago."

"She defeated every champion in the junior division."

Everyone turned toward Emily.

"If she was that talented..."

"...why did she disappear?"

Emily took a slow breath.

"Ten years ago, my parents died in a car accident."

"The same night..."

"...my little brother Noah was diagnosed with a rare heart condition."

The arena became completely still.

"I was seventeen."

"I had no family left."

"No money."

"No home."

"I sold my medals."

"I sold my costumes."

"I even sold the skates that won me my championship."

Her voice cracked.

"I quit skating so my brother could stay alive."

Many spectators lowered their heads.

Some contestants who had mocked her minutes earlier could no longer meet her eyes.

Emily continued.

"For years we lived in shelters."

"Sometimes we slept in train stations."

"Sometimes we went days without eating."

"But every dollar I earned went toward Noah's treatment."

She gently rested a hand on the wheelchair.

"The doctors told us he needed one final surgery."

"It costs..."

She swallowed hard.

"...one hundred thousand dollars."

The entire arena looked up at the banner hanging above the rink.

FIRST PRIZE — $100,000.

Only then did everyone realize why she had come.

Not for fame.

Not for revenge.

Not to prove anyone wrong.

She had come because this competition was her brother's last chance to live.

Even the television commentators struggled to continue speaking.

One whispered,

"I've covered sports for thirty years..."

"I've never witnessed anything like this."

At that moment...

A loud voice suddenly interrupted the silence.

"She's lying."

Everyone turned.

A beautifully dressed woman stepped out from the competitors' area.

It was Vanessa Morgan...

the reigning national champion.

She crossed her arms and pointed directly at Emily.

"If she's really such a legend..."

"Why is there no record of her in the federation?"

"And how do we know this isn't all just a performance to win sympathy?"

The audience began murmuring again.

Emily lowered her eyes.

She didn't answer.

But someone else did.

From the VIP section...

A deep voice echoed through the arena.

"Because I erased every record she ever had."

Every head turned toward the elderly man slowly standing with the help of a cane.

Several judges immediately recognized him.

Their faces turned pale.

"No..."

May you like

"It can't be..."

"The former president of the National Figure Skating Federation..."
