CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO DESTROYED HER CAREER

The elderly man walked slowly toward the ice.

The entire arena stood in stunned silence.

Judge Harrison whispered,

"Mr. Robert Whitmore..."

The legendary former president of the federation stopped a few feet from Emily.

His eyes were filled with regret.

For several long seconds...

Neither of them spoke.

Then Robert removed his hat.

"I'm sorry."

Emily closed her eyes.

"You don't owe me an apology anymore."

"But I do."

The reporters rushed closer.

Television cameras zoomed in.

Robert faced the crowd.

"Ten years ago..."

"Emily Carter was the greatest young skater this country had ever produced."

"I believed she would become an Olympic champion."

He paused.

"And then I made the biggest mistake of my life."

The arena listened in complete silence.

"A wealthy sponsor approached the federation."

"He wanted his own daughter to become the face of American figure skating."

The crowd gasped.

"When Emily refused to throw a championship..."

"...people with money made sure she disappeared."

The judges stared in disbelief.

Robert nodded sadly.

"They pressured officials."

"They canceled her invitations."

"They erased her rankings."

"They made sure no club would ever accept her again."

"I was too weak to stop them."

Vanessa's confident smile slowly disappeared.

"What are you saying?"

Robert looked directly at her.

"The sponsor..."

"...was your father."

The entire arena exploded with shocked voices.

Vanessa took several steps backward.

"You're lying!"

"My father would never—"

Before she could finish...

A tournament official ran toward the judges carrying an old storage box.

"We found these while preparing the historical exhibition."

Inside were dusty folders, sealed envelopes, and several videotapes.

One envelope bore Emily's name.

Still unopened.

Robert's hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was an official letter dated ten years earlier.

He handed it to the chief referee.

The referee read aloud.

"Emily Carter has been permanently removed from the national development program due to... administrative restructuring."

Robert interrupted quietly.

"That document was forged."

Another envelope contained something even more shocking.

A certified contract.

The signatures of senior officials.

And proof that millions of dollars had been donated to influence athlete selections.

The audience erupted in outrage.

People who had laughed at Emily only an hour earlier now stared at her in horror.

Vanessa's face turned pale.

She whispered,

"I... I never knew."

Emily looked at her calmly.

"I believe you."

"But someone did."

At that exact moment, security guards sprinted toward the VIP entrance.

One of them shouted into his radio,

"Stop him!"

"The sponsor is trying to leave the building!"

Every camera in the arena instantly swung toward the exit...

As a powerful businessman in an expensive suit pushed through the crowd, desperately trying to escape before the truth reached the entire world.
