CHAPTER 7 — THE HEART MONITOR WENT SILENT... THEN A STRANGER STEPPED FORWARD

The piercing tone from the heart monitor echoed through the arena.
Emily collapsed beside Noah's wheelchair.
"Noah! Stay with me! Please... open your eyes!"
The crowd that had been cheering only moments earlier now stood in stunned silence.
Several children in the audience began crying.
The medical team rushed Noah onto a stretcher.
One paramedic started chest compressions while another prepared a defibrillator.
"Charging... clear!"
The electric shock jolted through Noah's small body.
Nothing.
Again.
"Charging... clear!"
Emily covered her face, unable to watch.
Vanessa knelt beside her, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I'm so sorry..."
Emily whispered,
"No... please don't leave me too."
The arena had become so quiet that people could hear the blades of the Zamboni humming in the distance.
Then...
A calm voice broke the silence.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
An elderly man wearing a long gray coat walked through the crowd, carrying a worn leather medical bag.
One of the doctors frowned.
"Sir, this is a restricted area."
The man calmly opened his wallet and showed an identification card.
The lead physician's eyes widened.
"Professor Daniel Brooks..."
The doctors immediately stepped aside.
Professor Brooks knelt beside Noah and quickly examined him.
He looked up at Emily.
"How long has he been waiting for surgery?"
"Almost... eleven months."
The professor sighed heavily.
"I know this condition."
He looked toward the hospital director, who had arrived after hearing the commotion.
"If we operate tonight, he still has a chance."
Emily's eyes filled with hope.
"But... I don't have the money yet."
Before anyone could respond...
A familiar voice echoed from the front row.
"I'll cover every dollar."
Everyone turned again.
It was the elderly janitor who had quietly watched Emily from the beginning of the competition.
He slowly removed his work gloves and smiled.
"You don't recognize me, do you?"
Emily stared at him in confusion.
The man reached into his pocket and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed a teenage Emily standing on the ice with a middle-aged rink employee proudly holding her first gold medal.
Emily gasped.
"Mr. Thomas..."
"My first coach."
Thomas smiled warmly.
"I was never just the janitor."
"I volunteered here after retiring... because I never stopped believing you'd come home."
Emily burst into tears.
"But... you can't possibly pay for Noah's surgery."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
"I can't."
He looked toward the packed arena.
"But maybe..."
"...they can."
Without another word, he picked up the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"You came here to watch a skating competition."
"But today..."
"...you witnessed something much greater."
He paused.
"Who wants to help save this little boy?"
For two long seconds...
No one moved.
Then a little girl in the front row walked forward and placed twenty dollars on the ice.
"I want to help."
Seconds later...
A businessman added one hundred dollars.
Then another.
Then another.
Within minutes...
Hundreds of people lined up.
Cash.
Checks.
Bank transfers.
Even rival athletes removed their medals and auctioned them on the spot.
The arena had transformed into something no one expected...
A family of complete strangers fighting together to save one little boy.
But as the donations continued...
A nurse suddenly ran toward Professor Brooks.
Her face had turned pale.
"Professor..."
"...there's another problem."
The professor looked up.
"What is it?"
She whispered,
"We've just learned the hospital's only available operating room has lost power after an electrical fire."
The crowd gasped.
May you like
Every second mattered...
And Noah's life was slipping away.
