CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN THEY THOUGHT WOULD NEVER FIGHT BACK

The first thing Elena felt wasn't pain.

It was silence.

The kind of silence that only exists in houses where terrible things happen behind expensive walls.

Her blood spread across thousands of dollars' worth of shattered Italian glass while Victor Harlan's polished shoe rested casually against her throat.

"She's finally stopped pretending," Marissa laughed, folding her arms. "Maybe now she'll die quietly."

Adrian didn't even look at his wife.

He checked his watch.

"The lawyers will be here in two hours. Get rid of her before then."

Elena wanted to scream.

Nothing came out.

Her lungs burned.

Her vision blurred.

Then—

The mansion's giant oak doors exploded open.

Everyone turned.

Malcolm Vale entered without saying a word.

Behind him came six security officers dressed in black.

Three attorneys.

A court-appointed receiver.

Two financial investigators.

And finally...

A judge.

Victor frowned.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Malcolm slowly removed his leather gloves.

"I came to collect my property."

Victor laughed.

"This house belongs to my family."

"No."

Malcolm calmly lifted the deed.

"It belongs to the Vale Trust."

Silence.

Adrian stepped backward.

"No... Elena transferred everything to us."

Malcolm smiled.

"That's what you believed."

One attorney slid several folders across the marble floor.

"The transfer agreement was never legally completed."

Victor's confidence cracked.

"What?"

"The signature..." the attorney continued.

"...belongs to Elena."

He paused.

"But the approval code belongs to someone already dead."

Everyone stared.

"The document was forged."

Victor's face lost all color.

May you like

And Elena...

Smiled for the first time in months.
