CHAPTER 6 — "The Confession That Changed Everything"

Daniel arrived less than twenty minutes later.
He froze at the sight of the destroyed apartment.
"My God..."
"Who did this?"
Isabella quietly picked up a broken picture frame.
Inside was a photograph of herself at twenty-two, standing beside dozens of young ballet students.
Every one of those children had become professional dancers.
Every one...
Except her.
"They're afraid," she whispered.
Daniel clenched his fists.
"Afraid of the truth."
Just then...
His phone rang.
The screen displayed one name.
Dad.
Richard Carter.
Daniel answered immediately.
"Dad?"
Richard's voice was calm.
"Come home."
"We need to talk."
...
An hour later...
Daniel walked into his childhood home.
The enormous mansion felt colder than ever before.
Richard was waiting in the library.
A fire crackled quietly in the fireplace.
Without saying a word, Richard placed Edward Carter's diary onto the table.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"You have it?"
Richard nodded.
"I've had it for thirty-seven years."
Daniel stared at him in disbelief.
"You knew?"
"I knew enough."
"Then why didn't you tell anyone?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"Because I was a coward."
Silence filled the room.
Finally, Richard opened the diary to its final page.
His voice shook as he read aloud.
"If anyone ever reads this...
Know that Isabella Laurent was innocent.
I accepted money because I believed exposing her would save my newspaper from bankruptcy.
I convinced myself one dancer's career was a small price to pay.
I was wrong.
Every award I received afterward became heavier than chains.
If there is justice left in this world...
Tell Isabella I never deserved her forgiveness."
Daniel could barely breathe.
His grandfather...
The man whose portrait hung proudly throughout the academy...
Had confessed everything before he died.
Richard quietly wiped away tears.
"I wanted to release this years ago."
"But every board member stopped me."
"They said the academy would collapse."
Daniel stood.
"No."
"They protected money."
"They protected power."
"They never protected the truth."
Richard nodded slowly.
"There is something else."
He reached beneath the table and removed a small velvet box.
Inside lay an old gold medal.
The championship medal Isabella should have received fifty-eight years earlier.
It had never been awarded.
Because the competition had been fixed from the beginning.
Daniel looked at it in stunned silence.
"This belongs to her."
Richard nodded.
"Then give it back."
"But understand something first."
"If you reveal the diary..."
"Our family's name will be ruined."
"The academy may lose everything."
Daniel closed the velvet box.
His answer came without hesitation.
"Then let it."
"Some names deserve to fall..."
"...so the truth can finally stand."
Richard slowly smiled.
For the first time in decades...
He was proud of his son.
But neither man noticed the tiny red recording light blinking beneath the bookshelf.
Someone else was inside the mansion.
Hidden.
Listening.
Recording every word.
And before sunrise...
That recording would be delivered to the academy's board of directors.
The people who had spent nearly sixty years protecting the biggest lie in ballet history.
And they had already decided...
May you like
If Isabella Laurent appeared in public again...
She would never get another chance to tell her story.
