CHAPTER 9 — "The Secret He Carried for Fifty-Eight Years"

Three days before the World Ballet Championship...

A nurse quietly entered Room 417 of St. Mary's Hospital.

The elderly patient hadn't slept.

His eyes remained fixed on the television, where every news channel was covering the miraculous return of Isabella Laurent.

The nurse smiled.

"You've been watching the same story all day."

The old man nodded weakly.

"I've been waiting fifty-eight years to see her smile again."

His name was Thomas Bennett.

Very few people recognized it anymore.

But decades earlier, he had been the principal conductor of the National Royal Ballet Orchestra—the man who had stood in the orchestra pit during every one of Isabella's greatest performances.

The nurse adjusted his blanket.

"Do you know her?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I loved her."

Those three words hung silently in the room.

"I asked her to marry me the night before the championship."

"She said yes."

Tears rolled down his weathered face.

"But the next morning..."

"...the newspapers called her a criminal."

"My producers warned me that if I defended her, my own career would be over."

"I was a coward."

"I stayed silent."

"And that silence cost me the woman I loved."

The nurse gently squeezed his hand.

"You still have time."

Thomas slowly reached into his bedside drawer.

Inside was a small velvet ring box.

Untouched.

For fifty-eight years.

"I carried this everywhere."

"I hoped one day..."

"...I could finally give it to her."

The following afternoon, Daniel and Isabella arrived at the hospital after receiving an unexpected phone call.

When Isabella stepped into Room 417...

She froze.

Thomas struggled to sit upright.

For a long moment...

Neither of them spoke.

Time seemed to disappear.

Finally, Thomas whispered,

"I'm sorry."

"I should have stood beside you."

"I believed the lies because it was easier than fighting them."

"I've regretted that every single day."

Isabella slowly walked closer.

She gently touched his trembling hand.

"You weren't the only one who was afraid."

Thomas opened the velvet box.

Inside rested the same engagement ring.

Its diamond still sparkled.

"Would you accept it now?"

Daniel quietly turned away, giving them privacy.

The room fell silent.

Isabella smiled through tears.

"You proposed to a twenty-two-year-old ballerina."

She placed her hand over his.

"But the woman standing here today is eighty."

Thomas laughed softly.

"Then I'm eighty too."

"And I've never stopped loving her."

With trembling fingers...

Isabella slipped the ring onto her hand.

The nurse wiped away tears.

Daniel couldn't hold back his own.

May you like

Fifty-eight years late...

Love had finally found its way home.
