CHAPTER 3 — "The Inspection Nobody Survived"

The manager forced a nervous smile.
"Mrs. Eleanor, please forgive the misunderstanding. We would be honored to serve you privately."
Eleanor looked at Claire.
"Privately? Why?"
Claire lowered her eyes.
The same woman who had treated Eleanor like trash now looked terrified.
Eleanor walked slowly to the Crown Aurora necklace.
"My husband once told me a luxury store should never measure people by their shoes."
No one spoke.
Then Eleanor turned to the security guard.
"Tell me honestly. Were you about to remove me?"
The guard hesitated.
Claire quickly interrupted.
"He was only doing his job."
Eleanor's eyes sharpened.
"No. He was doing what you expected him to do."
The manager's face tightened.
"Claire is one of our top sales associates."
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"That may be the problem."
Then she opened her handbag again and pulled out a folded letter.
"This morning, I received seventeen complaints from customers who said they were humiliated here."
Claire's face turned pale.
Eleanor continued,
"Single mothers. Elderly people. Immigrants. Nurses. Teachers. People who saved for years to buy something meaningful."
She looked around the room.
"And every complaint had one name in common."
Claire whispered,
"Mine?"
Eleanor nodded.
Before Claire could defend herself, the wealthy socialite stepped forward.
"Honestly, Mrs. Eleanor, some people simply don't belong in stores like this."
Eleanor turned to her calmly.
"And what makes someone belong?"
The woman lifted her chin.
"Status. Taste. Money."
Eleanor stared at her for a long moment.
Then she said the sentence that froze everyone.
"My dear, your husband bought your necklace here last month..."
The socialite smiled proudly.
"Exactly."
Eleanor's voice dropped.
"With his mistress."
The woman's smile vanished.
Gasps exploded through the room.
Eleanor pointed toward the private showroom camera.
"He asked our staff to hide the receipt under another name."
The socialite trembled.
But Eleanor was not finished.
"And Claire helped him."
Claire stepped back.
The manager looked at her in horror.
"Is that true?"
Claire's lips parted, but no words came out.
Eleanor looked at the necklace beneath the spotlight.
"Luxury without integrity is just expensive shame."
May you like
And then she gave her first order.
"Lock the doors."
