CHAPTER 8 — "The Billion-Dollar Secret Was Never About Money"

Everyone turned toward Richard.

Thomas grabbed his collar.

"Where is it?"

Richard laughed.

"You still think this is about diamonds."

"It never was."

Eleanor slowly closed her eyes.

She had feared this answer for decades.

Inside the original vault had been a small wooden box.

No jewels.

No gold.

No cash.

Only a handwritten journal.

Her husband's final journal.

Thomas looked confused.

"A diary?"

Eleanor nodded.

"Your father documented every illegal partnership powerful businessmen tried to force him into."

"He refused all of them."

"He wrote every name."

"Every bribe."

"Every threat."

"And every person who wanted control of this company."

Richard's smile disappeared.

He realized Eleanor had just revealed far more than he expected.

The reporters upstairs were still broadcasting live.

Every word echoed across television screens nationwide.

Richard suddenly panicked.

"You shouldn't have said that."

He shoved Thomas aside and sprinted toward the emergency staircase.

But before he reached the exit...

A calm voice echoed through the chamber.

"That's far enough."

An elderly maintenance worker stepped from the shadows.

For twenty years...

Employees believed he cleaned the basement.

No one had ever asked his name.

He quietly held up a badge.

Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Richard froze.

The agent smiled.

"I've been working here for nineteen years."

"Waiting for you to come back."

Richard's knees buckled.

"I... I can explain."

"You already have."

The agent pointed toward the tiny red light hidden above the vault.

"The entire conversation has been recorded."

Richard collapsed onto the cold stone floor as officers rushed into the chamber.

But Eleanor wasn't celebrating.

She looked at the empty vault with tears in her eyes.

"If the journal is gone..."

"Then your father's last message is gone forever."

Thomas gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

Before he could speak...

The ancient vault door slowly creaked open by itself.

Inside...

There were no diamonds.

No journal.

Only a small wooden envelope addressed in elegant handwriting.

"To my family... if you're reading this, it means I knew who would betray me."

Eleanor's hands began to tremble.

Because the handwriting was unmistakable.

May you like

Her husband had planned this moment...

Twenty-five years before it happened.
