Chapter 3 – The Vault Beneath the Mansion

Richard’s face trembled.

Every person in the jewelry store watched as the most powerful man in the Sterling empire knelt before a woman they had mocked five minutes earlier.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“Sir…” she whispered. “This must be a misunderstanding.”

Richard did not answer her.

His eyes stayed locked on the elderly woman.

“Eleanor…” he said, voice breaking. “I thought you were gone.”

Eleanor Sterling looked down at him with eyes colder than the diamonds around them.

“No, Richard.”

“You hoped I was gone.”

The words struck harder than a slap.

The board members went silent.

One of them, an older man named Harold Bishop, suddenly stepped backward, as if he had seen a ghost.

Eleanor noticed.

“So you remember me too, Harold.”

Harold’s lips parted, but no sound came out.

Richard rose slowly.

“Mother, please. Not here.”

Eleanor smiled.

“That is exactly what your father said the night he locked me out of my own company.”

Gasps filled the room.

Vanessa looked around, panicking.

“Everyone, please stop recording!”

But it was too late.

At least ten phones were already pointed at them.

Eleanor turned toward the necklace in the glass case.

“That diamond piece was never meant to be sold.”

Richard swallowed hard.

“It belongs to the private collection.”

“No,” Eleanor said.

“It belongs to my daughter.”

A heavy silence fell.

Richard froze.

“Your… daughter?”

Eleanor slowly removed an envelope from her handbag and placed it on the counter.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The name written on it made Richard stagger backward.

Amelia Sterling.

Born thirty-two years ago.

Father: Richard Sterling Sr.

Mother: Eleanor Sterling.

Richard whispered, “That’s impossible.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with pain.

“Your father told the world I disappeared because I was unstable.”

“But the truth was worse.”

“He sent me away after I gave birth to a child he never wanted anyone to know existed.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The customers were no longer laughing.

They were witnessing the collapse of a dynasty.

Eleanor looked directly at Richard.

“And now, after all these years…”

“I came back because Amelia is dying.”

Richard’s face turned pale.

Eleanor continued.

“She needs money for treatment.”

“And the company that was built on my designs refused her medical claim three times.”

Richard could barely breathe.

“Where is she?”

Eleanor’s voice dropped.

“Closer than you think.”

At that exact moment, the boutique doors opened again.

A cleaning woman stepped inside, pushing a cart.

Her uniform was simple.

Her hair was tied back.

Her face was tired.

Vanessa immediately snapped,

“You! Why are you coming through the front entrance?”

The woman looked up.

Eleanor turned toward her and whispered,

“Amelia.”

The cleaning woman froze.

Richard stared at her.
