CHAPTER 8 â The Hero No One Expected
Smoke poured through the hallways.
Panic erupted.
Women pounded on locked cell doors, screaming for help.

Emily looked at Scarlett.
"We still have time."
Scarlett nodded without hesitation.

Truckloads of hidden cash, weapons, and years of blackmail records were seized.

Weeks later, Scarlett stood before the parole board.
The chairwoman looked at her file.
"You spent years spreading fear."
Scarlett lowered her head.
"I know."
"But one decision saved more than two hundred lives."
The room fell silent.
Her sentence was reduced for her extraordinary cooperation.
As Scarlett walked out of Blackridge Prison for the first time in twelve years, Emily was waiting outside.
Scarlett smiled nervously.
"I never thought we'd meet again."
Emily smiled back.
"Neither did I."
Scarlett looked at the sunrise and whispered,
"That fight in the laundry room..."
Emily nodded.
"It wasn't the end of your story."
"It was the first day you finally became free."
