CHAPTER 1 — I SAVED THE LION CUB... THEN ITS MOTHER CAME FOR ME

The moment I looked up, every drop of blood in my body seemed to freeze.
The lioness stood no more than fifteen feet away.
She didn't roar.
She didn't move.
She simply stared at me with cold amber eyes that looked ancient, intelligent... and terrifying.
The rescued cub immediately let out a tiny cry.
The lioness answered with a deep, rumbling growl that echoed across the canyon like distant thunder.
My hands began to shake.
Every survival instinct screamed at me to run.
But I knew one thing about predators.
Running meant becoming prey.
So I stayed perfectly still.
The little cub slowly stumbled toward its mother, limping from the cuts on its tiny paws after nearly falling into the abyss.
The lioness stepped forward.
One slow step.
Then another.
Each heavy paw landed silently on the wet rocks.
She never looked away from me.
My breathing became shallow.
If she attacked now, nobody would ever know what had happened.
There was no phone signal.
No other hikers.
Only endless cliffs, dark forest... and a mother protecting her baby.
She reached the cub first.
Using her rough tongue, she carefully licked the dirt and blood from its face.
The cub rubbed against her chest and cried softly.
For one brief second, I thought everything was over.
I slowly began backing away.
Then the lioness suddenly lifted her head.
Her ears flattened.
Her muscles tightened.
A low growl rolled from her chest.
It wasn't directed at the cub anymore.
It was directed at something behind me.
I frowned.
Behind me?
Before I could turn around, birds exploded from the trees.
Branches snapped.
Heavy footsteps thundered through the forest.
Whatever was coming was enormous.
The lioness instantly positioned herself between the cub... and me.
That made no sense.
Why would she protect me?
Then I saw it.
A massive shadow emerged from the trees.
Not one.
Three.
Three enormous male lions.
Scarred.
Thin.
Wild-eyed.
They weren't part of the lioness's family.
And judging by the way they stared at the injured cub...
They weren't here to help.
The largest male let out a deafening roar that shook the valley.
The lioness answered with one twice as fierce.
I suddenly realized something horrifying.
I wasn't trapped between a lioness and death anymore.
May you like
I was standing in the middle of a territorial battle.
And there was absolutely nowhere to run...
