Chapter 3 - The Midnight Caller

I dropped the photo as if it had burned my skin.

"Mark, what is going on?!" I screamed, the tears finally bursting through. "Was this house owned by your family? Why did you tell me we bought this place off a random foreclosed bank listing?!"

"Sarah, listen to me!" Mark grabbed my shoulders, his eyes wild with panic. "I was adopted! You know I grew up in foster care! I never knew who my biological parents were. When the real estate listing popped up six months ago, I felt a strange drawing to it... but I had NO idea!"

Before I could process his words, Rada suddenly stiffened. Her ears pinned back against her skull, and she let out a blood-curdling bark towards the open hole in the wall.

Down inside the dark void where the cylinder had sat, a faint, rhythmic clacking sound echoed from deep within the structure of the house.

Suddenly, the house landline in the hallway began to ring.

It was 2:45 AM. Nobody had our landline number—we had only activated it two days prior for our security system setup.

Mark slowly walked into the hallway and picked up the receiver. He held it to his ear, his knuckles turning white. He put it on speakerphone.

A raspy, distorted voice rasped through the speaker: “You opened the cylinder, didn't you, Mark? You couldn't leave the wall alone. Now he knows you're back.”
