Chapter 7 - The Unthinkable Betrayal

The floor hatch suddenly creaked wider. A pale, vein-covered hand reached up from the darkness beneath the bedroom floor and grabbed the rim of the hatch.

Mark raised the crowbar, ready to strike, but stopped dead in his tracks.

The man climbing out of the hatch was old—his hair long and silver, his face lined with age—but his eyes were undeniable. They were Mark's eyes.

"Hello, Mark," the man whispered, stepping into the room. "I'm your father."

"You're a monster," Mark spat, stepping between the old man and us. "You locked us in here! You've been spying on my family!"

"I locked you in to protect you," the old man said, his voice desperate. "The people who came after me forty years ago—the ones who ran the black-budget facility—they didn't lose track of you. They sold you this house on purpose! They wanted you to open the vault so they could retrieve what I hid down there!"

Before Mark could reply, the heavy bedroom window shattered into a million sharp shards.

A flashbang grenade bounced across the hardwood floor.
