Chapter 8 - The Climax & The Final Twist

BOOM!
Blinding light and deafening sound exploded in the room. I covered Chloe, screaming as smoke filled the air. Rada was barking madly, lunging toward the broken window.
Figures clad in dark tactical gear dropped into the room from the roof outside, laser sights cutting through the thick smoke.
"SECURE THE CONTAINER! NEUTRALIZE THE TARGET!" a stern voice shouted.
In the chaos, Mark’s father grabbed Mark’s arm, hauling him toward the hidden hatch in the floor. "Down! Now! It’s the only blast-proof shelter!"
Mark grabbed my hand, pulling Chloe and Rada with us as we plunged into the dark opening beneath the floorboards, slamming the heavy iron hatch shut seconds before bullets ripped through the bedroom ceiling.
We fell into a subterranean concrete bunker illuminated by emergency red lights. Computer screens, survival supplies, and strange electronic machinery lined the walls.
My husband turned to his father, breathing heavily. "What is this place? What were you hiding from them?!"
The old man walked over to a heavy central console and tapped the screen. A file popped up titled: PROJECT ECHO - COGNITIVE DUPLICATION (1984).
He looked at Mark with tears in his eyes.
"Mark... you aren't my son," the old man confessed quietly. "My son died in 1984. You... are the first successful human clone produced by the facility. And Sarah..."
He turned his eyes to me with a look of profound horror.
"...you aren't a stranger who randomly met Mark in college. Your memories were implanted. You were created in the same lab to monitor him. That's why your dog knew something was wrong with the wall—she wasn't responding to a ghost or a pest... she was responding to the silent tracking signal emitting from inside your own skull."
I stood frozen in place as the bunker door above us began to shudder under the impact of heavy battering rams.

I reached up to touch the back of my neck... and felt a small, hard, metallic ridge beneath my skin.
