I returned to Greystone Manor late that evening. The rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a clear, star-filled night sky that glittered brightly over the Long Island coastline.
I walked through the grand front doors, stepping into the warm, illuminated foyer.
Little Rosie was sitting on the Persian rug near the fireplace, playing quietly with her stuffed rabbit while her aunt from Boston watched over her with a gentle smile.
When Rosie saw me walk in, she dropped her toy, scrambled to her feet, and ran over, wrapping her tiny arms tightly around my leg.
“Mr. Damian! You’re home!” she cheered happily.
I knelt down, picking her up in my arms, feeling the warm, innocent weight of a child who no longer had to live in the shadow of fear.
“I’m home, sweetie,” I whispered, kissing the top of her head. “And we’re never leaving.”
Marco stepped out from the study, holding a final, heavy leather-bound ledger—the original property deed of Greystone Manor, rewritten legally and ethically under the newly established Carter-Vance Foundation.
