Chapter 1 - The Box in the AtticThe morning sun cast pale, dusty rays across Aunt Colleen’s linoleum floor. She looked older than her years, her fingers trembling as she slid a cardboard box across the table. It was sealed with heavy packing tape, yellowed with age, but across the top, someone had written a name in sharp, heavy marker.

My name.

Colleen wouldn’t look me in the eye. She kept her hands clasped tightly in her lap. “Your mother told you that your father built this life for all of us. She told you that Chelsea is the golden child because she carries the family name forward with Carter. But Lucy... your mother lied. She’s been lying for thirty years.”

With a swift tug, Colleen sliced open the tape with a paring knife.

Inside weren’t old baby clothes or school art projects. There were legal documents, birth certificates, and a thick stack of medical records dating back decades. On top rested a certified copy of a birth certificate bearing my mother’s maiden name—and a father listed as unknown.

Beneath that was a stack of financial portfolios bearing letterheads from high-end estate law firms.

“Your father isn’t your biological father,” Colleen said, the words dropping like stones into the quiet room. “And neither is Chelsea’s father the man you all think he is. Your mother... she engineered an entire dynasty of lies. And she made your father sign a will twenty years ago that leaves everything—every penny, every property, every hidden asset—to Chelsea and Carter. But there’s a catch. A legal clause that she never expected you to find.”

I picked up the top legal document. My heart hammered against my ribs like a caged bird. The document wasn’t a standard will. It was an ironclad trust—and my name was written across the primary beneficiary line as the sole legal executor and trustee of my father’s entire estate.

My mother hadn’t just treated me like a servant. She had made me the legal master of her entire world, and she didn’t even know it.
