Chapter 10 - The Only Family That MattersThat evening, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and pink.

Inside our kitchen, the smell of homemade lasagna filled the air. Dany sat at the dining table, happily coloring another dinosaur while humming a little tune to himself.

The front door opened, and Aunt Colleen walked in, carrying a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies.

“Smells amazing in here!” Colleen smiled, kicking off her shoes in the entryway.

Dany instantly dropped his crayons, scrambled out of his chair, and ran straight over to hug her legs. “Aunt Colleen! You brought cookies!”

“Of course I did,” Colleen laughed, bending down to hug him tightly before looking up at me with shining, joyful eyes.

I walked over, pulling two plates from the cabinet and setting them on the table. My phone sat on the kitchen counter—completely silent, completely peaceful, and entirely free of toxic demands or midnight emergencies.

I looked at Dany laughing with Colleen, and for the first time in my life, I felt an overwhelming sense of absolute completeness.
