Chapter 6 - The Uninvited GuestTwo days later, I was sitting on my front porch drinking coffee while Dany played happily in the sandbox in the front yard. The neighborhood was peaceful, a stark contrast to the absolute war zone happening over at my parents’ house.

A sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb.

My stomach tightened. It wasn’t my mother’s car, and it wasn’t Chelsea’s SUV. A man in an expensive tailored suit stepped out of the passenger side, while an older, impeccably dressed woman emerged from the back.

It was Aunt Colleen—accompanied by a man I had never seen before in my life.

Colleen walked up the paved walkway, her expression a mix of nervousness and fierce determination. The man behind her carried a slim leather briefcase.

“Lucy,” Colleen said softly as she reached the bottom of the porch steps. “I’m sorry to drop by unannounced, but things at your mother’s house have escalated far beyond what any of us expected.”

I stood up, wiping my hands on my jeans. “What happened, Aunt Colleen?”

“Your mother didn’t just lie about the trust,” the man in the suit spoke up, stepping forward and extending a hand. “My name is Richard Vance. I’m the senior partner at Vance & Associates Estate Law. And your mother made a very critical mistake when she tried to hide your father’s primary medical power of attorney from you.”

I shook his hand, gesturing for them to join me on the porch. Dany looked up from his sandbox, waving happily at Aunt Colleen, who waved back with a warm, melancholic smile.

“What kind of mistake?” I asked, sitting back down in my rocking chair.

Richard opened his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of color-printed bank statements. He laid them out across the small wooden table.

“For the past five years, your mother has systematically drained three separate trust funds set up by your grandfather specifically for your education and your future,” Richard explained, pointing to various highlighted lines of transactions. “She funneled over four hundred thousand dollars into private offshore accounts registered under Chelsea’s name. When your father suffered his stroke, she tried to accelerate the liquidation so she could buy a luxury condo in Florida under her maiden name.”

My breath caught in my throat. Four hundred thousand dollars. Money my grandfather had left behind to ensure my future—stolen, redirected, and spent on luxury cars, designer bags, and Carter’s private academies.

“She didn't just treat you like a servant, Lucy,” Richard said quietly. “She committed grand larceny and interstate financial fraud.”
