Chapter 16 - The Long-Awaited Cry

The call came at 2:14 AM on a crisp Tuesday morning in late October.
It wasn't a sudden emergency or a frantic dash through midnight traffic; it was the steady, calm progression of nature taking its course. Maya woke me with a quiet tap on the shoulder, her breathing measured, her eyes calm and focused.
“Daniel. It’s time.”
Within twenty minutes, we were checked into the maternity ward of the Virginia Memorial Hospital. The nurses, recognizing us from our prenatal visits, moved with professional, reassuring speed.
For the next twelve hours, I stayed by Maya’s side, holding her hand, wiping her forehead with a cool damp cloth, whispering every encouraging word I could muster. The memories of my deployment—the sandstorms, the radio static, the constant background hum of danger—vanished entirely. The world shrank down to the rhythmic monitor beeps, the warmth of Maya’s skin, and the fierce, overwhelming love swelling in my chest.
When the doctor finally smiled and said, “One more big push, Maya, I see the head,” my heart hammered against my ribs like a battering ram.
Maya gripped my hand with a strength I didn't know she possessed, let out a fierce, determined breath, and pushed through the final wave of pain.
A split second later, the room filled with the loudest, clearest, most beautiful sound I had ever heard in my life.
A sharp, healthy, indignant cry.
“It’s a boy,” the doctor beamed, lifting a squirming, red-faced infant into the air before wrapping him snugly in a warm towel and placing him directly onto Maya’s chest.
Maya burst into tears, laughing and sobbing all at once, pressing her face against our son’s damp hair. “Oh, look at you... look at you...”

I leaned down, kissing Maya’s forehead, then gently brushing my finger against our son’s tiny, perfect cheek. He stopped crying instantly, his little fists curling as he let out a soft, contented sigh.
“Welcome to the world, little man,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “Your mom and I have been waiting a very long time to meet you.”
