Chapter 12 - The Quiet House

That evening, the return to our suburban home felt entirely different from the hollow, suffocating arrival of two days before. The air no longer smelled of my mother’s expensive perfume or the cold malice of Julian’s presence. It smelled of coffee, fresh rain, and the quiet comfort of a home reclaimed.

Maya and I sat side by side on the living room sofa, the television off, listening to the gentle hum of the refrigerator and the distant patter of water dripping from the roof.

“Do you think she’ll call?” Maya asked softly, staring down at her teacup.

“Victoria?” I shook my head. “Pride is the only thing my mother ever truly possessed in abundance. Right now, she’s sitting in a holding cell blaming everyone except herself for getting caught. Calling me would mean admitting defeat, and she’s incapable of that.”

Maya leaned her head against my shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to release months of accumulated terror. “When she told me the baby wasn't yours... Daniel, for a terrifying second, when I was alone in this house with her and Julian watching me like prison guards, I started to doubt my own sanity. They made me feel like I was losing my mind.”

I wrapped my arm around her, pulling her close, pressing my lips against her hair. “You never lost your mind, Maya. You survived. You held the fort down while I was half a world away, and you protected our family even when you thought you were completely alone.”

She reached down, taking my hand and placing it gently over her belly. Beneath my palm, a faint, undeniable kick pulsed against my skin.

The baby was strong. Healthy. Growing in a world where the shadows had finally been driven out into the open.

“We’re going to be okay,” I whispered.

“We’re more than okay,” Maya smiled, her eyes bright with unshed tears. “We’re invincible.”
