Chapter 4 - The Raid

The black-and-white cruisers pulled up to Carter Lane Logistics headquarters at 3:15 PM with their lights spinning silent, ghostly circles against the gray asphalt of the loading dock.

I sat in the passenger seat of Marcus’s unmarked sedan, watching through the rain-streaked windshield as federal agents in windbreakers moved with practiced, quiet efficiency toward the main office doors.

Julian’s silver BMW was parked right out front, taking up my old spot by the loading bays.

Inside that building were twenty-eight trucks, our life’s work, and the digital ledger that would send my brother and mother to federal prison for a very long time.

“Ready?” Marcus asked, putting the car in park.

“Let’s move,” I said.

We stepped out into the cold drizzle, my boots splashing through puddles as we crossed the tarmac. By the time we reached the glass double doors, two federal agents had already cuffed Julian’s lead operations manager and pushed him against the reception desk.

Julian was standing in the doorway of my old corner office, his face flushed red with indignant fury, shouting at a pair of agents.

“You can’t do this! I am the managing director of VJ Holdings! Call my mother’s lawyer right now—”

“Shut up, Julian,” I said, stepping into the office.

His head snapped around. The color drained from his face as if someone had pulled a plug in his veins.

“Daniel?” he stammered, backing up against my mahogany desk. “What—what is the meaning of this? You’re ruining everything! We were building an empire!”

“You were building a prison cell,” I corrected coldly, stopping a few feet away from him.

My mother stepped out of the private conference room, her silk dress immaculate, her pearls gleaming under the fluorescent lights. She looked at me with absolute disdain, her chin held high.

“You pathetic ingrate,” Victoria spat, walking toward me with a chilling composure. “After everything I sacrificed to raise you, you bring federal agents into your own family’s business because your hormonal wife got confused?”

“Mom, stop talking,” Julian whimpered, realizing the gravity of the federal badges surrounding them.

“Be quiet, Julian!” Victoria hissed, turning her sharp glare onto me. “He can’t touch us, Daniel. The papers are signed. The judge will rule in our favor. You’ll be court-martialed for abandonment before the week is out.”

“The SCRA protects deployed service members from fraudulent asset seizure, Mother,” I said, my voice cutting through her tirade like glass. “And federal wire fraud supersedes state contract law every single time.”

Agent Vance stepped into the room, holding Julian’s open laptop up in an evidence bag. The screen was still glowing, displaying an ongoing file transfer straight to an unencrypted offshore server in the Cayman Islands.

“We got the live data stream, Captain,” the agent nodded to me. “We have everything we need.”

Victoria’s composure finally cracked. Her face went slack, and she staggered backward, grabbing the edge of the conference table for support.

“No,” she whispered. “No, this isn't how it was supposed to go.”
