Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Within an hour, the office was cleared. Julian and Victoria were sitting side by side on metal folding chairs near the loading bay, their hands zip-tied behind their backs, waiting for the transport vans to arrive.

The rain had stopped, leaving a thin, silver mist hanging over the Virginia countryside.

I stood in the center of my old office, looking out the large glass window at our trucks lined up in the yard. The company was ours again. The digital locks had been reset, the fraudulent LLC dissolved by court order, and the federal investigators were already seizing the offshore accounts tied to my mother’s defense contracts.

Maya walked into the office, holding a mug of hot tea. She stopped beside me, resting her head gently against my shoulder.

“They’re gone,” she whispered.

“They’re going away for a long time,” I replied, wrapping my arm around her waist, careful of our baby growing safely between us.

Downstairs, Julian shouted one last desperate plea, begging me to drop the charges, claiming family loyalty, invoking every cheap excuse he had used his entire life to escape the consequences of his actions.

I didn't even look down.

Loyalty isn't a bloodline; it’s a choice made every single day through hard work, honesty, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder when things get dark.

My mother and brother had chosen greed.

Maya and I had chosen each other.

As the transport vans pulled away down the highway, carrying the architects of our brief nightmare into the custody they had so richly earned, I finally felt the last six months of tension drain out of my shoulders.

I looked down at Maya, kissing the top of her head as the afternoon sun broke through the clouds, bathing our office in a warm, unshakeable golden light.

“Welcome home, Captain,” she smiled softly.
