Chapter 4 - The Raid on The Rookery

"Explain," Elias ordered, his voice cutting through the panic like a razor blade. He didn't flinch, didn't raise his voice, but the sheer atmospheric pressure in the room dropped ten degrees.
Miller swallowed hard, holding up the phone. "An anonymous tip was filed with the SEC and the U.S. Attorney’s office thirty minutes ago, sir. They claim the Voss Corporation has been funneling offshore capital through shell companies registered under a dormant trust—a trust bearing the exact name of Clara Monroe."
Zaria staggered backward, clutching the edge of the dining table. "Clara Monroe? My grandmother? That’s impossible! She lived in a cramped two-room apartment above a dry cleaner's her entire life! She didn't even have a passport!"
"That is what the federal warrant alleges," Miller said frantically, his eyes darting between Elias and Zaria. "And that’s not all, sir. Reporters from the Chicago Tribune and local news networks are swarming the perimeter gates. Someone leaked security camera footage from the Pearl Room showing Zaria smuggling her baby into your private office, accompanied by documents claiming you are harboring a fugitive bloodline to seize control of a hidden multi-billion-dollar estate trust."
Silence descended upon the dining hall—a heavy, suffocating silence.
Zaria looked at Elias, her mind spinning wildly. The timing was too neat, too coordinated. Someone had known she worked at the Pearl Room. Someone had known about her grandmother's past. Someone had used her and little Theo as a Trojan horse to infiltrate the Voss empire.
"It was a trap," Zaria whispered, horror washing over her. "All of it. Me getting hired at the Pearl Room eight months ago... my babysitter canceling at 5:26 a.m. last Thursday... someone leaving the service elevator unlocked so I could sneak up to your office. It was all orchestrated to put me in your path!"
Elias didn't look surprised. In fact, his dark eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as a cold, terrifying smile touched his lips.
"Welcome to my world, Zaria," Elias said softly. He turned away from her and strode toward the wall beside the fireplace. He pressed his thumb against a concealed biometric panel hidden behind a wood-carved molding. With a heavy click, a section of the stone wall slid open, revealing a hidden armory and a secure command center lined with monitors.
"Sir, the federal agents are breaching the front courtyard!" Miller shouted from the hallway as heavy sirens wailed in the distance, cutting through the roaring wind off Lake Michigan. Red and blue emergency lights flashed wildly against the stained-glass windows of the grand estate.
"Lock down the property," Elias commanded, stepping into the command center and slamming his fingers across a master control keyboard. "Activate protocol Zero-Omega. Seal the perimeter gates, cut all external data feeds, and route all internal communications through our encrypted dark-net servers."
"Mr. Voss!" Zaria cried out, running toward the open vault door. "What about Theo? He’s upstairs in the nursery! If federal agents storm the house—"
"Clara has already been instructed to secure the nursery and move to the underground panic shelter," Elias interrupted without looking back at her. He pulled a heavy, matte-black Walther pistol from a magnetic rack on the wall and checked the magazine with a practiced, lethal click. "No one touches that child. Do you understand me?"
"Who is doing this?" Zaria demanded, grabbing the sleeve of his crisp dress shirt. "Who hates you enough to burn your entire empire to the ground using me and my baby?"
Elias turned his head slowly, looking down at her hand on his arm, then up into her terrified eyes.
"My cousin, Julian Voss," Elias said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "He thinks he can outplay me by weaponizing my own ghosts. But he made one critical mistake."

"What's that?"
"He forgot," Elias said, racking the slide of the pistol back into place, "that ghosts bite back."
