Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Water

The night air off Lake Michigan was freezing, biting through Zaria’s thin navy dress as the damp wind whipped across the rocky shoreline. Waves smashed violently against the jagged boulders, sending up plumes of white spray that caught the amber glow of the hidden dock lights.

Parked against a floating wooden pier was a sleek, military-grade inflatable rigid-hull boat equipped with twin outboard engines and shrouded in matte-black camouflage.

"Get in," Elias instructed, steadying the rocking vessel with one large hand while holding out his other to help Zaria onboard.

Zaria carefully lifted the tactical stroller containing Theo into the center cockpit, securing the harness locks just as Clara hopped aboard behind them. Miller stayed behind on the dock, holding a heavy encrypted satellite transceiver.

"Sir, I’m staying behind to wipe the server logs and manage the local distraction," Miller said, his face grim. "If the feds trace this tunnel, I’ll buy you at least six hours before they realize which direction you headed."

Elias nodded once, a silent acknowledgment of profound loyalty between men who had stared down death more than once. "Keep your phone secure, Miller. Meet me at the northern safehouse by dawn."

Elias stepped into the boat, pulled the heavy sliding hatch shut over the cockpit to shield them from the freezing spray, and slammed the throttle forward.

The twin engines roared to life with a deafening, guttural scream, instantly launching the boat away from the rocky shore like a missile fired from a tube. Zaria gasped, gripping the edges of the seat as the vessel skipped violently over the churning black waves of the lake, plunging deeper into the stormy darkness.

Inside the enclosed cockpit, the glow of the digital navigation panels illuminated Elias’s sharp profile as his hands gripped the carbon-fiber steering wheel with absolute precision.

Theo stirred in his stroller, letting out a soft whimper.

Without breaking his focus on the churning water ahead, Elias reached out, his large hand gently resting on top of the stroller’s canopy, rubbing the fabric in slow, soothing circles just as he had done in his office.

Miraculously, Theo quieted down, his breathing evening out once more.

Zaria watched Elias from the corner of her eye, a whirlwind of emotions churning inside her chest. Fear, confusion, anger, and a strange, terrifying warmth tangled together.

"Where are we going?" she asked loudly over the roar of the engines and the pounding of the hull against the waves.

"Canada," Elias shouted back without turning his head. "I have a private airstrip three hundred miles north across the border. From there, a private jet is waiting to take us to a secure jurisdiction where Julian’s reach cannot touch us."

"And then what?" Zaria demanded, her frustration finally bubbling over. "We live on the run forever? I leave behind my home, my job, everything I've ever known because some rich maniac decided to use my family history as a pawn in a corporate bloodfeud?"

Elias cut the throttle slightly as they cleared the immediate coastal shelf, letting the boat settle into a steady, high-speed cruise across the open waters. He turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unshakeable finality.

"No, Zaria," Elias said coldly. "We don't run forever. We go on the offensive."
