Chapter 7 - The Counter-Strike

Dawn broke over the rugged Canadian wilderness, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and burning gold.

Inside a secluded, ultra-modern timber lodge nestled deep within a private pine forest near Lake Superior, Zaria sat wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket by a massive stone fireplace. Theo was awake now, cooing happily as he played with a wooden rattle Clara had found in the cabin's well-stocked nursery.

Elias stood at a standing desk near the floor-to-ceiling windows, surrounded by glowing monitors displaying encrypted financial ledgers, corporate ownership trees, and security feeds from Chicago.

"We have confirmation," Elias said, his voice cutting through the quiet morning air. "Miller executed the digital trap we set last night."

Zaria looked up from the floor where she sat with Theo. "What trap?"

"Julian thought he was clever by leaking your grandmother's name to the SEC," Elias explained, typing rapidly on an encrypted mechanical keyboard. "He assumed the federal warrant would force me to flee, leaving the Voss Corporation vulnerable to a hostile takeover vote scheduled for tomorrow morning at the corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago."

"And?"

"And what Julian didn't know," Elias said, turning around with a cold, triumphant smile, "is that the trust bearing your grandmother's name wasn't dormant. It was a honey-pot account designed by my father thirty years ago to catch whoever tried to embezzle the family assets."

Elias tapped a final key on his keyboard. On the main monitor across the room, a flashing red banner appeared: ASSET FREEZE AUTHORIZED. J. VOSS HOLDINGS SEIZED.

"As of thirty seconds ago," Elias continued smoothly, walking toward Zaria and stopping a few feet away, "Julian Voss has been legally stripped of his corporate voting rights, his personal bank accounts have been frozen under federal anti-money-laundering statutes for filing a false whistleblower report, and local authorities in Chicago have issued an arrest warrant for corporate fraud and extortion."

Zaria stared at him, her mouth slightly open. "You... you beat him at his own game in less than twelve hours?"

"In business, as in chess, you never react to your opponent's move," Elias said quietly, looking down at her. "You anticipate it three turns before they make it."

He knelt down on one knee, bringing himself down to her eye level. The harsh, intimidating billionaire of the Chicago high-rises was gone, replaced by a man who looked at her with a quiet, intense sincerity that completely disarmed her.

"You and Theo are safe now, Zaria," Elias said softly. "The federal warrants against you have been officially rescinded as a malicious fabrication by Julian's legal team. When we return to Chicago tomorrow, you can go back to your life—or, if you choose, you can remain with me."

Zaria’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at Theo, who reached out a tiny hand and grabbed the lapel of Elias’s expensive wool sweater, pulling on it playfully. Elias didn't pull away; instead, he gently touched the baby’s tiny fingers with a tenderness that made Zaria’s heart ache.

"Remain with you as what?" she whispered.

Elias reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her face.

"As my equal," Elias said, his voice dropping into a register that made the room feel suddenly warm. "As the co-director of the Voss Foundation, and... if you'll have me, as the person I want sitting across from me at the end of every long day."
