CHAPTER 4 — The Memory Hidden in a Photograph

The mansion exploded into chaos.

Emergency lights flickered red through the marble halls as gunfire shattered the silence outside.

Bullets struck the reinforced windows like hailstones.

Jack grabbed Evelyn's hand.

"Stay behind me."

She had barely taken two steps when an explosion rocked the front gate.

Smoke rolled across the driveway.

More than forty armed men poured through the entrance.

Not ordinary criminals.

Professional mercenaries.

Disciplined.

Silent.

Moving with military precision.

Jack's security team returned fire while escorting Evelyn toward an underground panic room hidden beneath the library.

Marcus slammed the steel door shut behind them.

The soundproof walls muffled the battle above.

Only the distant vibration of explosions remained.

For several long seconds...

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus looked directly at Evelyn.

"You've seen that man before."

She frowned.

"The assassin?"

Marcus nodded.

"No."

"The little girl you used to be."

She stared at him in confusion.

"I don't understand."

Marcus opened an old archive box taken from Jack's father's private vault.

Inside were faded newspaper clippings.

Old police reports.

Family photographs.

Birth certificates.

One photograph slipped onto the table.

Evelyn froze.

It showed a smiling police detective...

Her father.

Standing beside a wealthy businessman.

Jack's father.

The photo had been taken nearly twenty-five years earlier.

Behind them stood another man.

Young.

Clean-shaven.

Smiling warmly.

The same face as the gold-toothed assassin.

Only younger.

"My father knew him..."

Evelyn whispered.

Marcus nodded slowly.

"They were investigating someone together."

Jack looked stunned.

"My father never mentioned this."

Marcus sighed.

"Because he died before he could."

Another file revealed the truth.

Twenty-four years ago...

Jack's father and Detective Pierce had secretly investigated massive money laundering inside the Carson Syndicate.

Someone inside the family had been selling information to rival organizations.

Before they could expose the traitor...

Detective Pierce was murdered.

Officially...

It had been called a robbery.

Unofficially...

It had been an execution.

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"My father wasn't killed by a random criminal..."

Marcus lowered his head.

"He died protecting your family."

Jack felt his chest tighten.

For the first time in years...

He realized his own family had destroyed hers.

Then Marcus opened one final envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note from Jack's father.

If anything happens to me, trust Detective Pierce... never trust my brother.

Silence filled the bunker.

Jack slowly folded the letter.

"My uncle killed both our fathers."

Before anyone could speak...

The emergency monitor suddenly activated.

One security camera was still online.

A masked figure had entered the panic room's ventilation system.

Someone was already inside the bunker.
